For a trip to Grant County, historic buildings, collections, and events offer a range of points of interest. In Milbank, for example, you’ll find a reconstructed mill and several sites devoted to local history; other topics range from a one-room schoolhouse to agricultural collections. Recreational activities and seasonal access conditions may also factor into your plans.

History in Buildings and Collections

The Milbank Grist Mill was built in 1884 by English settler Henry Hollands and fully reconstructed in 2009. Its original construction and later reconstruction mark two distinct periods in its history. Also in Milbank, the Historical House was built in the 1880s. The former Carnegie Library building, dating from 1905, now houses the Grant County Historical Museum, whose collection includes historical artifacts.

Another look at education leads to the Amsden Country School, built in 1876. It is a one-room schoolhouse: typically, a single teacher taught grades one through eight there at the same time. The Anderson Claim Shanty dates from 1879. These different construction dates give the historical trail a timeline, though the sites do not all serve the same purpose or share the same history.

The Dolan-Justice Memorial Museum honors people who played an important role in the history of Milbank and Grant County. The Brown Earth Indian Church, also called the “Old Indian Church,” was built in 1877 by members of the Sisseton and Wahpeton. Seasonal access is limited to the period from early May through the end of November; check whether access is available on your planned visit date before you travel.

The origins of the American Legion Baseball League are also part of the local history: it was first proposed in 1925 at an American Legion state convention in Milbank. The Buggy Museum is located in Stockholm, South Dakota. Its collection includes 22 fully restored or original carriages, wagons, sleighs, and a hearse; the number may change as exhibits are added or updated. The Tractor Museum displays tractors from various years, including older John Deere tractors.

The Ag and Tractor Museums also include an early-era depot, an agricultural repair shop, a country kitchen with its original furnishings, and a Linotype typesetting machine. The collections also showcase machinery, tools, and vehicles used by pioneers. This places agricultural work, repair, and printing technology alongside vehicles as distinct historical subjects.

Getting Around and Recreation in Milbank

Milbank lies along the south branch of Whetstone Creek in northeastern South Dakota and is accessible via South Dakota Highway 15. The historic Yellowstone Trail through Milbank is now known as US Highway 12.

The city’s recreational facilities offer a range of activities. Pribyl Park, on the southern edge of Milbank, has two softball fields, a baseball field, a skate park, a disc golf course, and a small playground. Hurley Park has a splash pad and an ice-skating rink; skating is seasonal. When choosing activities, you can distinguish between sports fields, skateboarding and disc golf, and seasonal ice skating.

Events and Regional Highlights

Farley Fest is Milbank’s annual summer festival. The program includes live music, a car show, a cornhole tournament, a barbecue competition, a parade, children’s activities, vendor booths, and food and drink. The program may vary from year to year; check future event dates before you travel. The Abbey of the Hills hosts group gatherings, retreats, concerts, holiday celebrations, lectures, and dinners throughout the year. Individual event dates there may also change.

At the Milbank Farmers Market, vendors sell goods that they grow, raise, or make themselves. The selection changes seasonally. Nearby, the 100-acre Big Stone Island Nature Area is a natural attraction near Grant County and a refuge for songbirds, waterfowl, and shorebirds. These highlights complement the history of buildings and museums with events, seasonal market offerings, and a designated nature area.

If you plan to visit the Grant County Historical Museum, access is by appointment only; arrange and confirm your appointment in advance. For Brown Earth Church, the stated seasonal period applies; check access before you travel as well. Making these arrangements helps ensure your visits comply with each site’s access requirements.
