Mitchell brings together the World's Only Corn Palace, cultural collections, archaeological history and activities at Lake Mitchell. This lets you focus your stay on the Corn Palace tradition, historical themes or time by the water.
Corn Palace and event dates
The World's Only Corn Palace was founded on Main Street in 1892. Free tours are offered during the summer months. If you plan to take a tour, check the seasonal dates before your trip.
The Corn Palace Festival celebrates the annual redesign of the World's Only Corn Palace. Mitchell has also hosted the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo since 1971. Tours and events are different occasions: tours take place during the summer months, while festival dates and the rodeo schedule and program vary from year to year. If an event determines your travel dates, check the dates for your travel year.
Cultural history and archaeological evidence
The Carnegie Resource Center houses a permanent collection of Corn Palace memorabilia spanning the period from 1892 to the present. It also features original artwork and prints by Oscar Howe. The collection spans the period from the founding to the present day; Howe's works add a distinct artistic focus.
The Dakota Discovery Museum preserves a legacy that continues to shape identity today through artifacts, murals, clothing, tools and memories. The Mitchell Prehistoric Indigenous Archaeological Site includes the excavation of a 1,000-year-old Indigenous prairie village. This archaeological connection offers a different focus from Oscar Howe's artwork and the Corn Palace memorabilia.
Lake Mitchell and trails
Lake Mitchell is an artificial reservoir built in 1928. Visitors can go boating, fishing and kayaking on the lake; trails around it are popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. This lets you focus on activities directly on the water or on the trails around the lake.
A paved, one-mile trail runs along Dry Run Creek from Burr Street to Minnesota Street. The Dry Run Creek Bike and Walking Path follows Cemetery Road to Lake Mitchell. The named street endpoints provide a specific landmark for the first trail; the second route leads to the lake.
Golf and sports facilities
Lakeview Golf Course is a municipal 18-hole facility. Its driving range is more than 200 yards wide and 300 yards long. In addition to the number of holes, the size of the practice area is a specific feature of the golf offering.
The Mitchell Recreation Center offers an indoor pool, basketball courts, a weight room, a cardio room and racquetball courts. If you are comparing sports facilities, these provide several other types of activities alongside the golf course and its driving range: swimming, basketball, strength and cardio training, and racquetball.
