The HAHA Museum and Community Center is located at 25 North 2nd Street in Hermosa. Today’s museum occupies a building constructed in 1889 as the Hermosa Public School. It was later moved to its current location using many horse-drawn wagons. Both its original use and its relocation are part of the building’s history and give a visit a clear cultural and historical focus.

Schoolhouse, Relocation, and Historical Context

Another date to note is February 17, 2009: on that day, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Hermosa Masonic Lodge. The two dates represent different aspects of its history. 1889 marks its construction as a public school; 2009 marks its listing in the register under the name Hermosa Masonic Lodge. Together, they provide a timeline for considering the building’s former use as a school, its relocation, and its present function as a museum.

Opening Hours and Special Tours

The HAHA Museum is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m. in June, July, and August. Since these are seasonal opening hours, it is a good idea to check them again before traveling. If you would like a special tour, you can request one by email. Confirm the arrangements directly with the museum before planning your visit. This helps distinguish regular opening hours from a separately requested tour.

Garden and Council Oak

The Doug Hesnard Memorial Garden was created in front of the HAHA Museum to honor Doug Hesnard’s love of flowers and gardening. The garden thus commemorates a person and his connection to flowers and gardening. The Council Oak offers a different perspective on time: it has stood on the banks of Battle Creek for more than 400 years and is considered the largest burr oak in South Dakota. The tree has witnessed the development of history in this area. The personal tribute in the garden and the Council Oak’s long history offer different points of focus if you are interested in the stories passed down about the area.

The Planned Christmas Carnival 2026

The Hermosa Arts & History Association holds the Christmas Carnival annually as a thank-you event for local residents. The carnival is planned for December 6, 2026, at Hermosa School. The planned activities include Santa and Mrs. Santa, food, children’s games, a Santa Store, and craft vendors. Historically, the carnival also included a free soup supper cooked by HAHA members and children’s games. Check the dates and program for that year’s event before traveling.

There are therefore two different occasions to consider when planning your dates: the museum has seasonal summer opening hours, while the Christmas Carnival is planned for a single day in December. If you are mainly interested in the museum, use the opening hours listed above as a guide; for the carnival, the event date and that year’s program are what matter.
