South Sterling offers a look at local history and culture through two distinct sites: Peggy Bancroft Hall and Haag’s Mill Bridge. At the hall, the focus is on its construction history and a diverse museum complex; at the bridge, the year it was built, its historic designation, information panels and the memory of a mill shape how visitors see the site. For your planning, the type of visit matters as well as the subject matter: group tours, scheduled events and a weather-dependent Open House each have different arrangements.

Peggy Bancroft Hall: Museum and History

Peggy Bancroft Hall and Museum was built in 1904 by the Patriotic Order Sons of America of South Sterling. Peggy Bancroft Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This places the building’s local origins and its historic designation side by side, without conflating its construction date with its register status.

The museum complex includes a second-floor museum, a barn with agricultural exhibits, an icehouse exhibit, an outbuilding and an original root cellar. The various components range from a museum space to additional buildings and exhibits. Peggy Bancroft Hall should therefore be understood not just as a single exhibition space, but as a complex with different historical themes.

The museum buildings at Peggy Bancroft Hall are open for group tours by prior appointment. Peggy Bancroft Hall is also open during scheduled events and by prior appointment from April through November. If you are planning a group tour, you should arrange an appointment in advance; if you plan to visit during an event, it is worth checking that year’s calendar.

Haag’s Mill Bridge and the History of the Mill

Haag’s Mill Bridge was completed in 1873 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The two dates mark different milestones: 1873, the completion of the bridge’s construction; and 1988, its listing on the register. Information panels have been installed on both sides of the bridge in South Sterling. They add an explanatory layer to visitors’ view of the structure, right at the site.

The history of the bridge site also includes the Haag Gristmill, which operated until the 1920s. The bridge and the history of the mill offer different ways into the local past: one can be understood through its construction and later listing, the other through its former operation. The Greene-Dreher Historical Society is also located in South Sterling and is one of Wayne County’s six notable museums. The Greene-Dreher Museum is listed as a historic point of interest at 465 S Sterling Road in South Sterling.

Events and Seasonal Planning

The annual July Open House includes tours of the historic museum and outbuildings; tours are described for the 2025 edition. The annual Halloween program “Grave Matters” is scheduled for October 5, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Peggy Bancroft Hall in South Sterling. If you are planning for a later edition, check the date and program for that year rather than carrying over the 2026 date.

At the 2026 Harvest Open House, tours of the museum were planned, as well as access to the barn and outbuildings, weather permitting. The conditions for this event therefore differ from those for a group tour by appointment: here, the weather is explicitly part of planning your visit. The 2026 edition also offered homemade fruit jams and jellies, freshly prepared quick breads and soups to go; later editions may include different foods.

Another event with a specific date is the annual Jam & Jelly Day. On October 11, 2025, a wide variety of homemade jams and jellies were offered for sale. The July Open House, Halloween program, Harvest Open House and Jam & Jelly Day represent different event formats and time frames. Before traveling for a specific event, check the details for the relevant year.
