Lawrence County combines outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and authentic Amish heritage. When planning your trip, you can choose from a variety of interests: Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, historic buildings and museums, motorized recreation trails, and rural Amish culture and local food and drink. You can decide which of these themes matter most for your stay.
Nature, Trails, and Outdoor Activities
McConnells Mill State Park encompasses 2,546 acres of Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, which is designated a National Natural Landmark. Visitors to the park can see a historic gristmill and a covered bridge built in the 19th century. Here, a designated natural area and two specific historic structures come together in one park.
Quaker Falls Recreation Area has reopened. Check its status before you arrive, as it may change. Mines & Meadows in Wampum offers a different kind of outdoor experience: its 877-acre site features more than 84 miles of recreation trails for ATV and dirt bike riders. The offerings also include rides through abandoned limestone mines. Motorized recreation trails and underground rides are the main focus here.
Irons Mill Farmstead has more than 40 outdoor attractions, including a Candy Cannon. In Wampum, the North Country Trail passes through town and crosses Main Street. Wampum is also designated an NCTA Trail Town.
Museums, Tours, and History
The Lawrence County Historical Society Museum houses an extensive archival collection about Shenango China, considered one of the largest in the world. The main tour at the Historic Warner Cascade Theatre Museum focuses on the history of the Warner family. The museum regularly welcomes women's, men's, and school groups for tours; the tour includes a short film at the Cascade Theatre.
The “Freedom Fighters” tour through New Castle's North Hill Historic District offers a different historical perspective. It tells the story of city residents who championed American freedoms and worked to expand access to freedom and equality. The themes are distinct: Shenango China is represented by the archival collection, the Warner family is the focus of the theater museum's main tour, and civil rights are the subject of the tour in New Castle.
Advance reservations are required for tours of the Clavelli Cultural Heritage Center; tours are available by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Arrange a time before you arrive.
Amish Culture and Rural Places to Enjoy Food and Drink
Lawrence County is home to Pennsylvania's second-largest Old Order Amish community and the twelfth-largest in the United States. You can learn about Amish life on a guided tour or by following a self-guided driving route through the rural area. These offer two distinct options: a guided tour or a route you follow on your own.
Volant is located in the rural Amish region of western Pennsylvania. Along its old-fashioned Main Street, the town offers shops, restaurants, wineries, and a distillery. In a small red barn, Amish women make fresh Amish doughnuts every second Saturday and on event days. If you plan a visit, check these dates. Nova Destinations also brings together six wine, beer, and distillery locations in Lawrence County. Check the individual locations before you arrive.
