Aleppo is considered a rural village on the South Fork of Wheeling Creek. The Warrior Trail runs through the village; its location on a watershed and the historical interpretation associated with it offer two perspectives on the landscape and history. The Veterans War Memorial on Aleppo Road and Windy Gap Church above Aleppo add local remembrance and architectural history to these themes.

Landscape and the Warrior Trail

The Warrior Trail runs through Aleppo and follows a watershed that separates the drainage basins of Whitely Creek and Dunkard Creek. A watershed marks the boundary between these two areas. Aleppo itself is considered a rural village on the South Fork of Wheeling Creek. The creek is therefore part of the village’s description, while the watershed clarifies the trail’s hydrological setting. The landscape around the village is also considered to be defined by striking ridge-top views. The village’s location on the creek, the separate drainage basins, and the ridge-top views describe different features of the landscape.

The historical interpretation of the Warrior Trail

The Warrior Trail is said to have been used by Indigenous peoples for more than 5,000 years for trading flint and furs, hunting, and warfare. The historical interpretation focuses on presumed human use, while the watershed provides a framework for understanding the landscape. Thus, a possible history of use and a specific landscape feature coexist along the same trail.

Remembrance, architectural history, and local trade

The Veterans War Memorial is opposite the Post Office on Aleppo Road. It honors more than 300 people from Aleppo Township who served in the armed forces from World War I through the Vietnam War. Windy Gap Church is also located in the vicinity of Aleppo, above the village on the Warrior Trail; the present church was built in 1871. The memorial commemorates the service of people from Aleppo Township; the church is placed in historical context through the year the present church was built.

Jordan’s General Store in Aleppo closed on December 31, 2016. A local history article from 2019 located the former building near the Aleppo Post Office. This adds a historical connection to local trade to the stories of remembrance and architectural history.

Narrow valleys and regional views

In the vicinity of Aleppo, Aleppo Road passes through narrow valleys whose streams form the headwaters of the South Fork of Dunkard Fork of Wheeling Creek. This complements the watershed along the Warrior Trail with a different kind of landscape feature: here, the focus is on valleys and headwaters. If you would like to look beyond Aleppo, the continuation of Aleppo/Valley Road leads, farther afield, to Ryerson Station State Park. There, the former lake is managed as a unique wetland.
