Hummelstown can be explored through two distinct themes: nature along the Hummel Nature Trail and local history at the Parish House and on Main Street. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether spending time outdoors or exploring the area’s culture and historic character should shape your stay more. Parks and the monthly 2nd Friday in Hummelstown event add opportunities for play, sports and downtown activities.

Nature along the Hummel Nature Trail

The Hummel Nature Trail is a riverside area in Hummelstown. It is suitable for hiking, walking and kayaking; there are also viewpoints and picnic tables. The terrain is mostly flat, and the trails are shaded. If you want to spend time outdoors on foot, you can take the terrain and shade into account; if you prefer an activity on the water, kayaking is another option. The viewpoints and tables also let you choose between exercise, taking in the views and taking a break.

Parish House and Main Street

The Parish House was built in 1815 and is the oldest meetinghouse of a church congregation in Hummelstown. In 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historical Places. The dates mark two distinct milestones: the year it was built and its later listing on the register. Today, the building serves as a museum for the Hummelstown Area Historical Society and houses an extensive collection of memorabilia and artifacts. The collection adds a museum perspective to the architectural view.

Main Street is tree-lined and has charm and historic character. Its theme differs from that of the Parish House: here, the character of a street takes center stage, while the Parish House is a single, dated meetinghouse with a museum function. This offers two ways to explore local history: through the character of a street or through a specific building.

Parks and events

Alexander Park focuses on play and sports. It is located in the Graystone Farms development on Sweet Arrow Drive and has a large play area with modern playground equipment, a picnic pavilion and a multipurpose basketball court. Mehaffie Park is at the corner of West High Street and Runyon Road. Its amenities include a baseball field, a basketball court, playground equipment and a pavilion. The two parks overlap in their playground equipment, basketball facilities and pavilion; Alexander Park is characterized by its large play area and modern equipment, while Mehaffie Park also has a baseball field. Schaffner Park is at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Water Street. Park amenities can change, so check which facilities are currently available before your visit.

2nd Friday in Hummelstown is a monthly community event in the town center. Visitors can eat, shop and stroll there. It adds an event to the options that combines dining, shopping and a walk. Individual dates may change; check the dates in advance if you want to plan your visit around the event.
