Rickreall’s history spans the Applegate Trail expedition and local buildings and memorial sites. The Polk County Historical Society Museum is open to visitors year-round; group tours and fishing on Rickreall Creek are subject to their own conditions. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish regular opening hours, tours arranged in advance, and time-specific fishing rules.

Traces of Local History

The Rickreall School, also known as Grange #671, was built in 1916 and is currently used as a Grange. Its construction date, historic name, and present-day use all relate to the same building, offering a different point of reference for local history than the story of the Applegate Trail.

This expedition began in 1846: fifteen settlers from the Willamette Valley met at Rickreall Creek near Dallas and headed south to mark out a new route. The expedition’s specific starting point and purpose belong to the same historical episode: the group set out to lay out a trail, not to use an existing route.

A later milestone came in 1992, when the National Park Service designated the Applegate Trail a National Historic Trail as part of the larger California Trail. This distinction separates the 1846 expedition from the later designation as two different milestones in the trail’s history.

The memory of pioneer James Nesmith has its own point of reference. In 1969, the Polk County Parks and Recreation Commission and the Polk County Fair Board acquired 21.5 acres of land next to the Polk County Fairgrounds for a park intended to commemorate Nesmith’s gravesite. While the Applegate Trail story concerns an expedition and a marked route, this planned park was centered on commemorating a gravesite.

Rickreall Creek: Nature and Fishing

A 2003 traffic study recorded coho salmon, cutthroat trout, and steelhead in Rickreall Creek; Chinook salmon were considered possible. At the same time, according to the study, the current presence of fish was unknown. The species information should therefore be understood as a historical ecological assessment, not as a statement about present-day populations.

Rickreall Creek and its tributaries are open to trout fishing year-round. From May 22 through October 31, two fish at least 8 inches long may be kept per day; catch-and-release applies for the rest of the year. Because fishing regulations are time-dependent, check the current rules before fishing. This keeps the historical species observations clearly separate from practical catch regulations.
