An ancient cinder cone, river trails through varied landscapes, and young lava reveal the diversity you can discover in Deschutes. Cultural traditions and brewery experiences add to the mix. Whether you’re looking for views, geology, nature trails, or local events, these different highlights give your trip planning a clear direction.
From the Cinder Cone to the River Trails
Three trails at Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint lead up an ancient cinder cone east of Bend. From the summit, panoramic views stretch across the high desert to the Cascade Mountains. The Deschutes River Trail offers a very different perspective: it extends for more than 12 miles along the river, passing through pine, juniper, and ponderosa pine forests, canyons, and basalt rimrock formations.
The stretches within the river corridor also vary. The wetlands of River Run Reach are home to osprey, songbirds, trumpeter swans, otters, and beavers. At Old Mill Reach, three footbridges connect trails across the river and provide loop routes for hiking and biking. Riley Ranch Nature Reserve on the Deschutes River covers 184 acres and includes a river canyon and rimrock cliffs. Interpretive panels there cover geology, history, and ecosystems.
For a longer drive, the 66-mile Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway winds through mountains, lakes, and forests shaped by volcanism and glaciation. The drive usually takes three to five hours. The route begins in Bend in the north and at Crescent Lake in the south; seasonal access may vary. Check conditions before setting out.
Volcanoes and Trails at the Lava Field
Newberry Crater is an 18-mile-wide caldera with East Lake, Paulina Lake, Paulina Falls, and the largest obsidian lava flow in the country. At 1,300 years old, the Big Obsidian Flow is the youngest lava flow in Oregon. An easy, one-mile interpretive trail leads onto and across the lava flow of obsidian and pumice—a manageable way to get to know this distinctive rocky landscape.
Lava Lands Visitor Center is the interpretive center for Newberry National Volcanic Monument; its exhibits cover regional geological and cultural history. Visitor amenities there include the fully accessible, paved 5.5-mile Sun-Lava Trail. At Lava River Cave, you can explore a one-mile lava tube on your own. Seasonal operations and reservation requirements may change; check current conditions before your visit.
Other outdoor experiences focus on different activities: Tumalo Falls Day Use Area provides access to hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as picnic areas; seasonal conditions may vary. LaPine State Park offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and floating on the water. In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also available on the trails, though conditions vary by season. At Mt. Bachelor, summer lift access is available for mountain biking trails; check seasonal operations when planning your visit.

Sisters has hosted the community-owned, nonprofit Sisters Rodeo since 1940. The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show has been a local tradition since 1975.
