Clatsop County is bordered by the Columbia River to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west. This setting frames a trip where coastal landscapes and maritime history sit side by side. Fort Clatsop brings history particularly vividly to life: From December 1805 to March 1806, it was the winter encampment of the Corps of Discovery. Today, you can explore the reconstruction by walking through its rooms.

Coast and Trails on Different Scales

Fort Stevens State Park covers 4,300 acres. Its offerings include beach walks, a freshwater lake, trails, wildlife viewing, and a historic shipwreck. Coffenbury Lake has swimming areas and a boat ramp; a two-mile loop trail runs around the lake. This means different experiences sit side by side in the same park: coast, lakeshore, and traces of history.

Ecola State Park stretches along nine miles of coastline between Seaside and Cannon Beach and around Tillamook Head. Its trail network includes an eight-mile section of the Oregon Coast Trail and the 2.5-mile Clatsop Loop Trail, a historic interpretive route. The figures describe different scales: coastline length, trail section, and themed route. The difference is also useful for comparing distances: the lake loop is shorter than the Clatsop Loop Trail; the eight-mile Oregon Coast Trail section is considerably longer than both.

Tide pools are among Indian Beach’s natural features, and the beach is popular with surfers and beachgoers. If you plan to take a trail, check local conditions before your visit, as they can change.

Astoria: Views, Art, and Maritime History

Visitors to the Astoria Column can climb to the top. From the observation deck, there are panoramic views of the Columbia River and snow-capped volcanoes in the distance. A 525-foot-long mural spirals around the Column, combining the monument with art.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is designated Oregon’s official maritime museum. In the entrance area, an interactive exhibit map of the Graveyard of the Pacific depicts more than 200 large ships and 700 lives lost at sea. Visitors can board the museum ship Lightship Columbia; access may be subject to operational restrictions. Check before your visit.

Seaside Aquarium is also part of the coast’s history: It has been on the beach since 1937 and is considered the oldest privately operated aquarium on the West Coast.

Plan for the Season and Getting There
