Explore West Linn through three distinct themes: nature trails and wildlife viewing, river landscapes with different ways to access the water, and historic sites. When looking for a hotel, it may help to consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.

Riverfront, Island and Water Access

Mary S. Young Park is a quiet, wooded park of about 128 acres on the Willamette River. Its many trails total 5 to 8 miles in length. Here, the riverfront location and an extensive trail network come together in one park. Separate closure notices may apply to individual trail sections; check whether any such notices are in effect before your visit.

Cedar Island Park is a 14-acre island in the Willamette River. In spring, summer and fall, pedestrians can reach the island from Mary S. Young Park via a floating bridge. Check the bridge’s current status before your trip. Fishing from platforms is also available on the island.

Another river destination is Willamette Park. It is located at the intersection of 12th Street and Volpp Street, where the Tualatin River flows into the Willamette River. The park offers river access, including a boat ramp at Bernert Landing and a dock system. West Linn is also a partner in the Willamette River Water Trail. West Linn also has a public fishing dock.

Nature Trails and Wildlife Viewing

At Camassia Nature Preserve, hiking trails offer opportunities to observe rare and unique plant species as well as wildlife.

Ibach Nature Park also offers hiking trails and opportunities to view wildlife. White Oak Savanna offers a different landscape: it covers about 20 acres, and its upper area is covered with white oaks. At Maddax Woods, interpretive signs provide information year-round.

Beyond its individual parks, West Linn has a total of 25.6 miles of trails citywide. This total may change as the trail network changes in the future. The trail mileage at Mary S. Young Park and the citywide total describe two different scales: one individual park and the trail network throughout the city.

Historic Sites and Other Experiences

The Willamette Historic District is listed on West Linn’s National Historic Landmarks list. One specific historic building is the McLean House: the three-story house has 17 rooms and was built in 1927. Historic walking tours are also offered in West Linn, providing another way to explore the area’s history.

In addition to parks and historic destinations, jet boat trips are among the experiences offered in West Linn. You can weigh these different themes as you plan your trip without having to combine them into a set itinerary: trails and wildlife viewing offer a different focus from river access or historic sites.

Conditions also vary. The pedestrian connection to Cedar Island is available in spring, summer and fall, while the information on the signs at Maddax Woods is available year-round. This difference may be a practical consideration when choosing when to travel.
