Stanhope tells the story of a former iron industry closely linked to the Morris Canal. The canal ran through the town center and right past the Plaster Mill; the Musconetcong River flows along the edge of town. Nearby, Lake Musconetcong offers a second, water-focused perspective on the destination.
Industrial History along the Morris Canal
Stanhope grew from a small blacksmith town in the late 18th century into a major iron-processing community in the 19th century. The Morris Canal ran through the center and made Stanhope an important transshipment point for canal freight in the upper part of Sussex County. The Plaster Mill is the oldest surviving industrial building in the Stanhope community, once an early 19th-century iron-processing center. A branch leading to the iron furnaces crossed the main canal directly in front of the mill; the Morris Canal ran right past it. Iron processing and canal transport were therefore directly connected at this site. The Plaster Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 1977.
Numerous remnants of the former industrial community survived the transition to suburban development; the iron-processing era in Stanhope ended around 1925. The Stanhope Historic District (ID#335) includes parts of NJ Route 183 and McKinley, Linden, Main, Spring, King, New, High, Furnace, and Bell streets, as well as Musconetcong, Waterloo Road, Kelly Place, Plane Lane, Plane View, and Bedford Avenue.
Lake, Trails, and Events
Lake Musconetcong was created in the mid-19th century as a water supply for the Morris Canal and local ironworks. Shared by several communities, the lake is located near Stanhope and covers 329 acres. Visitors can explore it by boat, canoe, or kayak; fishing and recreation are available year-round. Fish species found there include chain pickerel, largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish. The lake’s present-day recreational use thus differs from its original industrial purpose.
Maps of walking paths and pedestrian walkways, as well as the Tri-Community Trails, are available for Stanhope. Throughout the year, the Recreation Advisory Committee holds a Halloween parade. The Recreation Committee also organizes an annual Easter egg hunt at Musconetcong Park. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, be sure to take the specific event date into account.
When planning your trip, it’s worth distinguishing between the different periods: the Morris Canal and the Plaster Mill represent transportation and iron processing, while Lake Musconetcong connects its industrial origins with today’s opportunities for boating and fishing. This allows you to choose Stanhope based on your interest in culture, activities on the water, or a combination of both.
