Ringwood brings together several very different things to discover: the New Jersey Botanical Garden with its gardens and surrounding woodlands, spring-fed Shepherd Lake, and the history of Ringwood Manor. When planning your visit, consider whether you want to focus on culture, guided trails, hiking, or time on the water.

The Manor and Ringwood’s History

The historic Ringwood Manor residence is preserved as a Historic House Museum and designated as a National Historic Landmark District. The Manor has 51 rooms. The building was constructed in various styles characteristic of the Victorian era, and its interior is eclectic.

Ringwood’s industrial history is also part of its story. During the American Revolution, iron mining at the site supplied iron for components of the chain system used to defend the Hudson River, for field ovens, and for household tools and hardware for the Continental Army.

The Skylands estate is also located in the community of Ringwood. The 1,117-acre property is now surrounded by Ringwood State Park.

Gardens, Woodlands, and Guided Trails

The New Jersey Botanical Garden includes 96 acres of gardens and is surrounded by 1,000 acres of woodland. The New Jersey Botanical Garden frequently offers guided tours of the gardens and the Manor House.

In the garden’s woodland, visitors can take an easy, child-friendly hike led by NJBG hike leaders. Tours and special events are also offered through the NJBG/Skylands Association. The program may vary by date, so it is worth checking the available dates before your visit.

Shepherd Lake and Outdoor Activities

Shepherd Lake is a 74-acre, spring-fed lake. There is a boat launch at the lake for visitors bringing their own boat, canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. Only electric motors are allowed on the lake. Shepherd Lake Recreation Area also offers boating opportunities and access to trails suitable for hiking.

Mountain bikers can also enjoy multi-use trails with varied terrain. Shepherd Lake and Skylands Parking Lot C are good starting points for accessing the trails.

In winter, the grounds and trails in the Ringwood Manor and Shepherd Lake areas offer numerous opportunities for cross-country skiing. However, the trails are not groomed, and rentals are not available.

Plan Your Visit

The Ringwood State Park gate is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Check the current hours before you travel so you can plan your arrival accordingly.
