Flemington brings history to life at specific sites while also offering designated walking trails and train rides. This gives you several options to focus on when planning your trip: a local history museum, a historic courthouse, trails with set distances, and a classic round-trip train ride. The themes that shape your stay will also influence which dates you should check in advance.

History at the House and Courthouse

The Samuel Fleming House was established in 2005 in Flemington’s first house as a local history museum for Hunterdon County. The beautifully maintained garden was originally designed in 2007. Its features include a pavilion, the Carmen Grimes Memorial Garden, a carefully researched colonial medicinal herb garden, The Children's Corner, a secluded seating area by an arbor, and seasonal rose displays.

The Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse and Jail in Flemington was the site of the “Trial of the Century,” the infamous Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial. Free tours of the Courthouse and Jail are available by prior appointment; confirm your appointment before traveling. These are separate from the public opening hours of the Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse: during exhibitions, it is currently open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless otherwise noted, and during special events. Check the current schedule before visiting, as opening hours may change.

Historic Sites and Walking Trails

Another reminder of the past is the historic “Flemington Raid” marker. It commemorates Captain John Schenck and his men’s attack on a British patrol led by Captain Geary in December 1776, between Copper Hill and Larison's Corner. Geary was killed and buried near the site of the skirmish; George Washington passed through this site in November 1780. The marker itself is on Route 30, at the entrance to Flemington from Ringoes: on the right when heading west, south of the Fleming Estate silhouette sign. Check the condition of the marker before visiting.

The Historic Flemington Trail is a self-guided tour covering one square mile and four centuries of history. Flemington also has designated walking trails of one, two, or four miles through the walkable downtown and scenic parks. These are different ways to orient yourself: the trail emphasizes its area and historical span, while the walking routes let you compare designated distances.

Train Ride and Market Visit

The Black River & Western Railroad offers train rides departing from Flemington Station in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The Black River Limited is a classic round trip between Flemington and Ringoes. Check current departure dates in advance for this trip. The Stangl Factory Farmer's Market takes place on Saturdays at 50 Stangl Road in Flemington.

The timing varies: free tours require an appointment, the Courthouse’s opening hours depend on exhibitions and special events, and the market takes place on Saturdays. When looking for a hotel in Flemington, you can first decide which focus will shape your trip and add the relevant dates to your plans.
