West Orange can be explored for trip planning through two distinct themes: Edison's history and nature and recreational activities. The Thomas Edison National Historical Park preserves Thomas Alva Edison's laboratory, his Glenmont estate, and collections. The South Mountain Recreation Complex and the South Mountain and Eagle Rock Reservations offer other specific starting points for walks, hiking trails, and recreational activities. First, consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Edison's Laboratory and Film History

The Thomas Edison National Historical Park preserves several aspects of Edison's work in one place: his laboratory, the Glenmont estate, and collections. The Main Laboratory Building includes Edison's library, workshops, a music room, and other exhibits. The different rooms give the laboratory more than one function: the library, workshops, and music room represent distinct areas of the building, while the exhibits cover additional topics.

A special destination for visitors is the Black Maria. It is a full-scale replica of Edison's film studio that visitors can enter. Those interested in film history will find a tangible connection to a studio here; those who want to take a broader view can also consider the library, workshops, and music room in the Main Laboratory Building. The Glenmont estate and collections are also among the things the park preserves.

Walking Trails and Recreation in South Mountain

The South Mountain Recreation Complex is located in West Orange. It includes the Turtle Back Zoo. The complex also has a 1.7-mile walking path. This makes the activity choices concrete: a designated path, a zoo, and a treetop adventure course are different recreational options to consider. The Essex County Treetop Adventure Course is a ropes and obstacle course. It therefore offers a different kind of activity from a walk, without requiring you to assume a particular route through the area.

The Turtle Back Zoo has a miniature railway that takes visitors through the South Mountain Reservation. This makes it possible to combine a zoo visit with a ride through the nature reserve. The South Mountain Reservation itself covers 2,000 acres and has hiking trails. For a stay focused on trails and scenery, it is therefore a destination in its own right, alongside the recreational offerings of the Recreation Complex.

Two Reservations, Different Points of Reference

The Eagle Rock Reservation also offers hiking trails and footpaths through wooded areas. It covers more than 400 acres and lies along the ridge of the Watchung Mountains between West Orange, Montclair, and Verona. One specific walk leads from Crest Drive to Washington Rock; the reservation makes this a leisurely walking option. This gives you several points of reference when planning time in nature: the size and hiking trails of the South Mountain Reservation, the ridge-top location and wooded paths of the Eagle Rock Reservation, and a named destination within the South Mountain Reservation.

These differences can help you choose your focus without arranging the offerings in a fixed order. For technology and film history, the laboratory, library, and Black Maria offer specific topics to explore. If you would rather plan around trails and scenery, you can choose between two reservations with different acreage and points of reference. At the South Mountain Recreation Complex, the zoo, walking path, and Treetop Adventure Course add other activities to these options.
