Southborough offers different perspectives on its landscape and local history: from fields and pastures on a working farm to woodland trails, reservoir trails and historic buildings. For planning, the specific differences between routes are helpful: a 0.7-mile woodland trail and a 1.2-mile loop are complemented by longer trail sections and a 33-mile regional trail.

Trails from a loop to a regional trail

The Bay Circuit/Boroughs Loop Connector Trail is a 0.7-mile woodland trail. It can be accessed at the intersection of Clemmons Street and Nichols Street, where parking is available. The 911 Loop Trail is longer at 1.2 miles and forms a loop behind the 911 Memorial athletic field. Both trails are suitable for activities including walking, trail running and snowshoeing; cross-country skiing is also possible on the 911 Loop Trail. At Pine Point, a short distance off its main trail, fishing and picnicking are possible.

The Southborough section of the Bay Circuit Trail runs for about 2.25 miles along the Sudbury Reservoir. Activities there include walking, trail running, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. At approximately five miles, the Sudbury Reservoir Trail offers a different route length: it heads west through Southborough to the Westborough border. There are fishing spots along the trail; historical markers tell the story of the Burnett House and Southborough’s early settlers.

Beyond the local scale, the Boroughs Loop Trail covers 33 miles and connects the trail networks of Marlborough, Southborough, Westborough and Northborough. The connected trail types include wooded hiking trails, bike paths, aqueduct trails and sidewalks. Hikers, walkers and runners are welcome on all sections. One section runs from Deerfoot Road in Southborough to Boundary Street in Marlborough/Northborough. This makes it possible to distinguish between individual trails with precisely stated lengths and a longer regional trail network.

Woods, Fields and Natural Areas

The Southborough Town Forest covers approximately 54.50 acres and is suitable for walking, trail running, walking dogs and snowshoeing. Another activity there is the “Explorin’ the Forest Scavenger Hunt.” Designed for all ages, it invites visitors to discover plants, animals and their habitats using different senses.

Breakneck Hill Conservation Land covers 90 acres of rolling hills, grassy paths and expansive views. Its trails are open to the public for quiet recreation and dog walking. In winter, they can also be used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Wilfred J. Turenne Wildlife Habitat offers a different woodland landscape: it consists mostly of relatively young, dry oak-hickory forest with granite outcrops. A demonstration planting of native shrubs and trees provides habitat for native pollinators and birds.

Chestnut Hill Farm is also part of Southborough’s landscape. It is one of the town’s last working farms. Visitors can cross 131 acres of fields and pastures lined with stone walls. The farm adds an agricultural touch alongside the woodland and trail areas.

Local History and Events

Fayville Village Hall offers another perspective on local history. It was built in 1911 as a meeting hall for the Grand Army of the Republic, in honor of Civil War veterans. After an extensive restoration, it became the new center for the humanities in Southborough and the surrounding communities. Together with the historical markers along the Sudbury Reservoir Trail, it offers a look at both early settlement and the town’s later culture of remembrance.

Southborough offers a range of occasions for visiting during an event. The August “Summer Nights” celebration includes rides, activities for children, live entertainment and fireworks. The annual Heritage Day features a parade, arts and crafts, food, games, pumpkin lighting, book sales and a 5K run. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the event dates in advance.
