Leominster combines extensive trails with local history and a seasonal connection to apple picking. To plan your visit, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: the trail network offers a range of options, while the downtown area, parks and Sholan Farms provide different points of interest. The specific trail examples range from a paved connector to a longer route over two ridgelines.
Trails and Landscapes
Leominster’s recreational trail network covers more than 40 miles and is open to hikers and cyclists. Local trails pass through forests, wetlands, meadows and scenic ridgelines. Two specific routes show how much length, surface and terrain can vary.
The Monoosnoc Ridge Trail stretches for more than nine miles from West Street in the north to Pleasant Street near Sholan Farms in the south. It crosses North Monoosnoc Hill and South Monoosnoc Hill. Scenic overlooks and unusual rock formations are among the route’s features. If you’re planning a longer trail over ridgelines, this provides a specific starting point for choosing your route.
At 4.7 miles, the Twin Cities Rail Trail is shorter and paved. It connects the downtown areas of Fitchburg and Leominster. This gives you two distinct trail profiles to choose from: a longer route over ridgelines and a shorter paved path between two downtowns. Comparing them can help you make a choice based on distance, surface and route.
The parks offer their own highlights, too. Barrett Park features a waterfall. In Doyle Community Park, trails pass through forests, fields and gardens on the grounds of a former estate, now managed by the Trustees. The destinations therefore differ not only in trail length, but also in the landscapes described along the way.
Local History and Culture
John Chapman, known as Johnny Appleseed, was born in Leominster on September 26, 1774. The Leominster Historical Society is housed in the historic Field School in the downtown area. Visitors are invited to explore its exhibits and historical research library, as well as its photo collections, artifacts, maps and documents. This combines a visit to the exhibits with the opportunity to discover a variety of historical materials.
The Johnny Appleseed Festival is held annually in downtown Leominster. The 33rd edition was scheduled for September 19, 2026. Check dates and details for future editions before planning your visit, as they may change.
Apple Picking at Sholan Farms
Sholan Farms is a community-owned apple orchard operated by the Friends of Sholan Farms and known for apple picking. It is also near the southern end of the Monoosnoc Ridge Trail on Pleasant Street. When planning, you can consider two specific interests side by side: a longer trail and a seasonal apple-related activity. Apple picking may be available only seasonally, so check before your visit.
