Fairhaven combines distinctive architectural history with a paved bike trail that provides access to coastal forests and salt marshes. It also has a historic connection to the harbor, a beach with seasonal and day passes, and an annual parade. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: explore Fairhaven’s local history, make the Phoenix Bike Trail your focus, or plan your visit around an event date.

Buildings and Local History

A distinctive feature of the Millicent Library is its 16-foot-tall stained-glass window. The firm Clayton & Bell made it in London in 1891; the window belongs to the library. Its place and year of manufacture give the artwork a specific time and geographic context, connecting a place in Fairhaven with a work from London.

The Unitarian Memorial Church has its own story: Henry H. Rogers had it built in 1904 in memory of his mother, Mary Eldredge Huttleston, funded its construction, and gave the church to the Unitarians. The patron, funding, and dedication are all connected. This helps put the church in context not only through its year of construction, but also through the personal memorial and the gift.

Fairhaven High School is a historic building dating to 1906, designed by Charles Brigham. The Fairhaven Historical Society Museum is on the second floor of the Academy Building. Discover Fairhaven also offers a self-guided tour sheet for download covering sites associated with Henry Huttleston Rogers. This provides a thematic framework alongside the individual buildings and the museum location.

Fort Phoenix is also part of Fairhaven’s history: Fort Phoenix State Park guarded the historic whaling harbor from the American Revolutionary War through the American Civil War. This long period places the harbor’s role across several eras and adds a maritime connection to the town’s architectural history.

Phoenix Bike Trail and Coastal Landscape

The 4.5-mile Phoenix Bike Trail is paved and provides access to Fairhaven’s coastal forests and salt marshes. The Fairhaven section is part of the South Coast Bikeway and is the bikeway’s longest stretch away from public roads, running between Main Street and the Mattapoisett town line. The trail therefore has both local and regional significance: it is a specific route in Fairhaven and part of a larger bike connection. If you want movement and landscape to shape your stay, you can take both into account in your plans.

Beach Visit and Event

At West Island Town Beach, Fairhaven’s Parks and Grounds Division manages parking and access, including seasonal and day passes. If you plan to visit, consider both pass types and check the information relevant to your date in advance.

The annual Fourth of July Parade & Cannon Ceremony follows Green Street to Fort Phoenix. The route connects the event with a place that also has a role in Fairhaven’s history. If the parade is the reason for your trip, check the date of that year’s event. This lets you distinguish a visit centered on the event from one focused mainly on architectural history or the bike trail.
