A 2,700-acre artificial lake is the centerpiece of Poverty Point Reservoir State Park. Richland can be explored in different ways: here, the focus is on water, while elsewhere, river landscapes and historic buildings reveal other sides of the area.
Water and Shorelines at Poverty Point Reservoir State Park
The lake shapes the park landscape, and the park also offers a range of water sports. A nature trail runs along a branch of Bayou Macon. The large expanse of water and the trail along the branch offer two distinct perspectives on the park. The lake is the main attraction for water sports, while the nature trail draws attention to Bayou Macon.
At the North Marina Complex, the facilities are grouped together: they include a swimming beach, a boat launch, a marina with 48 covered slips, a concession area, a fishing pier, and a fish-cleaning station. The number of covered slips gives a more precise measure of the marina than a general description of its water sports offerings. The swimming beach, boat launch, and fishing pier offer different ways to enjoy the water; the concession area and fish-cleaning station round out the listed facilities. Together with the nature trail, they illustrate the range of activities, from water-based offerings to a path along the branch.
Historic Buildings: From a District to a Single House
The Downtown Delhi Historic District encompasses 23 buildings across almost two city blocks. The commercial buildings form a continuous row along First Street and face the railroad line. Here, the focus is not on a single house, but on a succession of buildings within a cohesive district. This differs from the perspective on historic architecture offered by individual homes, where the building form and style stand out more.
The Trio Plantation House is a one-story, timber-framed residence in the Greek Revival style, built in 1869. It is located north of Rayville, opposite the meandering Boeuf River. The Nonnie Roark Rhymes Memorial Library has a different architectural profile: a small, squat-looking, one-story brick building dating from 1928.
The Miles-Hanna House is defined by its one-story timber-frame construction, Queen Anne style, and Eastlake details. The house dates from 1892 and retains its original defining features of the Queen Anne and Eastlake styles. It is a very rare surviving example of these styles. The construction years 1869, 1892, and 1928 form a timeline that allows the different style names and the contrast between timber framing and brick to be compared.
River Landscapes, Golf, and Wildlife Experiences
Along the Boeuf River, the Floy Ward McElroy Wildlife Management Area encompasses oxbow lakes and backwater areas. The river also forms the area's boundary for a distance of 4 miles. These details convey both the named water features and the area's extent along the river.
Black Bear Golf Club is part of Louisiana's Audubon Golf Trail. Four tee options and a full practice facility describe the club's amenities, while its membership in the trail places it within a broader golfing context. Golf thus adds another kind of experience to the themes of water, landscape, and architecture.
Wild Country Safari Park aims to combine visits with information about the animals kept there and entertainment. Another goal is to give the public close-up access to wildlife. Before visiting, check whether the park is currently operating and what offerings are available.
