Lucas can be explored through a range of interests: art and local history on one hand, and landscape and outdoor activity on the other. The Arts District brings together historic sites, public art, a museum, studios, galleries, and an art cooperative. When choosing the focus of your trip, you might therefore consider whether you want to center it more on cultural themes or on the landscape around Lucas.

Art and Local History

Bowl Plaza is located on Main Street. Its creation is also part of local history: the project took four years and was led by the Grassroots Art Center and an architect. This makes it possible to understand Bowl Plaza not only by its location, but also through a specific, multi-year creative process.

The “World's Largest Things” exhibit offers a different perspective. It is organized by theme and includes a map of Kansas with miniature versions of the state's largest attractions. In this way, individual themes sit alongside an overview of attractions across Kansas. Together with the Arts District’s wide range of offerings, the exhibit shows another facet of Lucas’s culture, without reducing its different places and themes to a single story.

When comparing these cultural points of interest, it helps to consider their different forms: the Arts District brings together a range of institutions and art forms; Bowl Plaza has its own project history, while “World's Largest Things” organizes its content by theme and brings it together on a map. Those interested in art and history can thus find several specific perspectives, rather than seeing only a single theme.

Landscape and Outdoor Activity

The Post Rock Scenic Byway runs from Wilson around Wilson Lake and ends in Lucas. It passes through farmland and grazing land, following the landscape’s natural curves. Here, the route and scenery take center stage. This differs from the individual art and history themes found in town.

The Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail near Wilson Lake offers another way to experience the surrounding landscape. The mountain bike trail is 28 miles long and rated an “IMBA Epic.” This distinguishes two different planning considerations: the byway is defined by its route and scenery, while the trail is defined by its mountain biking focus, length, and rating. If you plan to ride the trail, check access and current trail conditions before your trip.

Food Culture and Seasonal Visits

A specific culinary tradition is at the heart of Brant’s Market. The market is known for recipes of Czech origin, including Jaternice, Ring Bologna, and sausage. Brant’s Market makes its meat products on site using a range of traditional methods. The recipes’ origins, the named products, and the preparation methods together provide a more specific picture than a general recommendation for regional cuisine.

S.P. Dinsmoor’s Garden of Eden also involves seasonal planning: tours of the home’s interior and access to the mausoleum are offered seasonally. Schedules may change, so check current dates before visiting if you plan to take this tour or visit the mausoleum. This makes the decisions involved in visiting Lucas clear: art and local history form one thematic focus, while seasonal offerings and mountain bike trail conditions call for specific checks before your visit.
