Most of the Pratt Sandhills Wildlife Area consists of sandhills prairie with moderately to steeply rolling dune terrain. The protected area is in Pratt County, about 13 miles west and 6 miles north of Pratt. Sandhills prairie and dunes give this natural area two closely connected features: its prairie character and distinctly contoured terrain.
Animals and Exhibits
Live animals and aquariums are the focus at the Pratt Education Center and Museum. The facility is open to the public free of charge and cares for more than 100 live animals. There are also twelve aquariums, each with a capacity of 400 to 600 gallons. Together, the animals and aquariums offer two concrete perspectives on nature.
The ground floor has featured open exhibits since the building was constructed in 1913. According to a July 2026 update, the center had limited staffing and was open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Temporary changes may be announced at the entrance.
Art and History
The Vernon Filley Art Museum collects, preserves and exhibits art. Docent-led tours for adult and student groups are available by prior arrangement. So, if you are planning a group tour, be sure to make arrangements in advance.
The Pratt County Historical Museum displays prehistoric fossils excavated in Pratt County and elsewhere. It also presents artifacts from tribes that hunted along Turkey Creek and the Ninnescah River. Visitors can see fossils from various locations alongside artifacts connected with hunting along two named waterways.
The museums have different emphases: art is at the heart of the Vernon Filley Art Museum, while the Pratt County Historical Museum brings together prehistoric finds and artifacts from the history of hunting along the rivers. This distinction can help you choose the cultural part of your trip according to your interests.
Recreation and Getting There
Recreational activities in Pratt also vary. The Green Sports Complex hosts numerous tournaments, while Mae Dennis Park has a disc golf course. The Gary and Jean Cromer Municipal Pool offers two water slides. Lemon Park covers more than 117 acres. Together, the options range from tournaments and disc golf to water slides and parkland—different kinds of recreation rather than a single focus.
US Highways 54, 400 and 281, as well as State Highway 61, lead into Pratt. Nature, art, history and recreational activities offer different themes to help you plan your discoveries in Pratt County around your interests.
