The Frontier Army Museum spans a broad sweep of history: it presents the history of Fort Leavenworth from 1827 to 1917 and, at the same time, the history of the Frontier Army from 1804 onward. A permanent exhibit is devoted to the military exploration of the American West. Located in historic Fort Leavenworth, the museum preserves military artifacts from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Historic Wayside Tour includes 22 points of interest throughout Fort Leavenworth. Here, a specific place, its collections, and a broader story about the Frontier Army stand side by side.

Military History and Memorial Sites

Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery also tells the story of national memorial sites: it was one of 14 national cemeteries designated or established as such in 1862. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 15, 1999. The Rookery at Fort Leavenworth is the oldest continuously occupied residence in Kansas. The Buffalo Soldier Monument honors the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiments; the Berlin Wall Memorial recalls the historic barrier that divided East and West Berlin during the Cold War.

Carroll Mansion, a Victorian home dating from the 1880s, offers another glimpse into history. Elaborately handcrafted woodwork and stained-glass windows are among its features, along with antiques dating from the Victorian era through the early 20th century. The Ella Carroll Memorial Rose Garden is set within the home’s brick circular driveway. The C.W. Parker Carousel Museum features a fully operational carousel from 1913, originally made by the C.W. Parker Carousel Amusement Company in Leavenworth. Other exhibits include the oldest primitive carousel in the United States and an aluminum carousel by Paul Parker from the 1950s.

The collections also reach beyond military and architectural history. First City Museum displays memorabilia and artifacts from Leavenworth’s early frontier, railroad, and manufacturing industries, as well as from its prison system, telegraphy, and crafts. The Richard Allen Cultural Center opened in 1992 and is located across from historic Bethel A.M.E. Church, which was part of the Underground Railroad. The Center offers insight into African American history at both the local and national levels.

Historic Sites in Tonganoxie and Lansing

In Tonganoxie, the Community Historical Society operates a ten-acre historic site with four buildings: Honey Valley School, Reno Methodist Church, the Fairchild/Knox Dairy barn with its milk room, and a fire station. The town’s historic center also brings together several aspects of everyday life: architecture from around the turn of the 20th century sits alongside shops, boutiques, and American comfort food. Together, the buildings and town center offer different ways to experience history and present-day town life.

In Lansing, all tours by the Lansing Historical Society and Museum begin at the fully restored A.T.&S.F. depot at 115 East Kansas. Since 1991, the society has collected memorabilia related to the Kansas State Penitentiary. This combination of depot, collection, and tours offers another way to explore local history, without limiting the subject to a single era.

Trails, Parks, and Regional Perspectives

The trails described here offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors. Leavenworth Landing is a 0.25-mile linear park along the Missouri River in downtown Leavenworth. It offers opportunities for walking and jogging, a sculpture trail, viewpoints, and picnic tables; bald eagles can also be spotted. The Three-Mile Creek Walking Trail, by contrast, is a 0.5-mile paved trail for walking and cycling. One trailhead is near Haymarket Square at Seventh and Cherokee Street, and the other is at Leavenworth Landing Park, where the trail connects to the park’s path. Three-Mile Creek flows into the Missouri River.

Chieftain Park in Tonganoxie also has a 0.5-mile perimeter trail. Other amenities include playground equipment, soccer fields, and facilities for tennis, basketball, sand volleyball, and horseshoes. Comparing the two trails of equal length helps with orientation: the Three-Mile Creek Trail is paved and also intended for cycling; at Chieftain Park, the perimeter trail is complemented by several sports and play options. For a broader regional perspective, the 63-mile Glacial Hills Scenic Byway begins in Leavenworth in northeast Kansas and includes a visit to historic Fort Leavenworth.
