Local History at the Museum

A horse-drawn top buggy from 1900 and a general store with a post office, depicted as it appeared around 1920, provide tangible reference points for the permanent exhibition at the Lane County Historical Society & Museum. The exhibition presents the early history of Lane County through images and artifacts from the county’s five remaining towns. Grain, livestock and petroleum are also part of the story: the museum explains that Lane County produces these goods for the world. The general store represents everyday life around 1920, while the buggy is an older exhibit. Together, the displays connect economic themes with individual objects.

The Sod House is a special focus. Local farmers built it in 1961 as the first museum of the Lane County Historical Society. It houses the exhibit about the Lane County Bachelor; visitors can press a button in the exhibit area to hear a song about him. The house also features the artifact collection of Arle and Josephine Boltz. Many of their pieces were found in Lane County, in Kansas and in other states. The Sod House, the collection and the permanent exhibition offer different ways to explore the past: through a building, personal finds and the history of the county’s towns.

Buildings and Their Details

Built in 1931 of yellow brick with limestone trim, the Lane County Courthouse is in the Modern Eclecticism style. Two limestone reliefs beside the main entrance depict Dighton’s cultural heritage. A large painting of a sod house by local artist Mary A. Bosley, created in 1961, also hangs in the courtroom. The Lane County Community High School features stone relief panels depicting buffalo; its stadium is a natural limestone stadium built in 1937 as a WPA project.

At the Dighton Opera House, its former use draws attention to the history of the space: the building was constructed in 1908, and its second floor housed an opera house as well as a lodge hall. Dighton’s Historic Gas Station is a well-preserved 1937 Farmers Oil filling station with a repair shop and Mission-style design elements. It is privately owned. Together, these examples show different facets of local history—from building materials and reliefs to the former use of individual spaces.

Seasonal Recreation and Events

The pool at Dighton City Park & Pool is open from Memorial Day weekend through mid-August. Swimming lessons are offered during the swimming season, and the pool can also be rented for private parties or special events. Seasonal dates may change. Check current opening and lesson times before visiting, and confirm party booking arrangements with the pool.

Dighton Recreation offers football, volleyball, basketball and track and field during the school year. In partnership with the Lane County Country Club, the organization holds a golf clinic for children and adults with golf professionals from Buffalo Dunes. It also works with the Lane County Sheriff's Department to hold a Bicycle Rodeo that teaches bicycle safety. Clinic and event dates may change; check them in advance. The Lane County 542 Event Center is available to the community for special events and celebrations. Availability depends on the local schedule.

Bowling and Local Eats

Dighton Bowl & Diner combines bowling with dining: hot daily specials are served, and all kinds of memorabilia decorate the walls. This gives it a different character from Frigid Creme, a nostalgic roadside eatery with a classic walk-up window. The menu ranges from ice cream cones to baskets of fried shrimp. Dighton therefore offers different options for a break—from bowling and a meal to food at a walk-up window.
