Since the lake opened in 1997, more than 25 bird species have been observed at Banner Creek Reservoir. This connection with nature is complemented by a wide range of recreational activities: the reservoir has trails for hiking and biking, horseback riding trails, beaches and a disc golf course. In Jackson County, wildlife watching and a variety of activities go hand in hand, while golf, events and historic sites reveal other sides of the region.

Banner Creek: Trails and Activities by the Water

The 13 miles of hiking and biking trails form a combined trail network; there are also more than six miles of horseback riding trails. Three miles of the hiking and biking trails are ADA-certified. Trail routes may change, so it is worth checking for the latest information before your visit.

The beaches are located in the northwest and southeast of the reservoir. Check beach conditions and access before you travel. Day and annual permits are available for boating and personal watercraft; permit rules may change, so it is worth checking the current requirements in advance. A nine-hole disc golf course with lake views adds to the waterside activities.

Golf and Entertainment

Firekeeper is a par-72 championship golf course designed by Notah Begay III and Jeff Brauer. Tee options range from 7,500 yards at the back tees to 4,500 yards at the forward tees. This range offers a clear comparison of the different tee lengths; the course configuration may change over time. Firekeeper is directly across from Prairie Band Casino & Resort. Check your directions before you travel.

Prairie Band Casino & Resort offers 1,200 slot machines, 27 table games and a bingo hall; the gaming options may change. The intimate ballroom hosts live music and other live entertainment, with a changing program. There are also different dining options: a buffet and fine dining are available. These dining options may also change.

Buildings, Local History and Events

The Jackson County Museum is housed in a brick building dating from around 1905, originally used as a tin shop. The original tin ceiling remains and is directly connected to the building’s former use. The Holton Bath House and Swimming Pool was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 21, 2009. The name Battle of the Spurs also tells a story: it originated when a newspaperman mocked the posse’s retreat.

Holton, part of the region, has homes dating from around the turn of the century, with large porches and hand-carved decorations. This architecture provides a different historical accent from the museum’s former workshop building: here, the porches and carved details stand out in particular.

July Jubilee is an Independence Day celebration at Banner Creek Lake featuring live music, family activities and fireworks. If you plan to visit around the event, check the dates and program again in advance. For “Watch Your Glass,” 100 glass balls are hidden throughout Jackson County each year—in hiking trails, parks and public places. The hiding spots vary each time the event is held.
