More than 10,000 acres of forest preserves and parks make nature an important part of Winnebago County. Those who want to explore the landscape more closely will find a variety of places to start: trails along streams, dolomite cliffs and prairie, as well as gardens with waterways and ponds. Culture enthusiasts can also make their own discoveries—from a juvenile T. rex to historic buildings.

Forests, Water and Trails

Severson Dells Forest Preserve covers 369 acres of woodland, a stream and dolomite cliffs. Three miles of hiking trails add to the varied landscape. Within the same preserve, Wild Roots Nature Center offers weekly interactive programs, as well as nature exhibits, a library and a bookstore open to the public. Since the program schedule may change, it’s a good idea to check the latest dates before visiting.

The Grove is another feature at Severson Dells: this nature play area invites visitors to climb, build, explore and play creatively outdoors. Unlike a trail through the landscape, it’s all about hands-on discovery. At Critter Creek, children can operate water features and sluice gates, build dams and redirect flowing water. This makes water visible not only as part of the landscape but also as something to experiment with through play.

Two trails differ considerably in length. The Willow Creek Path is 1.57 miles long, follows Willow Creek and connects Harlem High School with Rock Cut State Park. The Perryville Path runs 14.9 miles from Home Depot north to Rock Cut State Park. These distances make the difference in scale clear without specifying a particular walking time. Rock Cut State Park also has groomed cross-country ski trails when conditions are suitable—a seasonal option dependent on current conditions.

Northwest of Rockford, Searls Park features a complex of more than 66 acres of remnants of dry, mesic and wet prairie, as well as wetlands. In 1984, 66 acres were designated an Illinois Nature Preserve. The different habitats and the designated area each tell a distinct part of the landscape’s story.

Gardens and Water Features

Anderson Japanese Gardens covers 12 acres of streams, waterfalls, winding paths and koi ponds. The interplay of water and paths gives the garden its distinctive character, and visitors can take in its individual features from different perspectives as they explore. Fresco at the Garden, within Anderson Japanese Gardens, serves breakfast and lunch daily. Since service offerings may change, check the latest hours as you plan.

Another series of water features can be found at Eclipse Lagoon: two fountains, a waterfall, a pedestrian bridge and terrace areas shape the grounds. A path connects Nicholas Conservatory with Sinnissippi Rose Garden. Nicholas Conservatory also hosts its annual spring butterfly exhibit. Visitors can see caterpillars, chrysalises and adult butterflies, and visit a butterfly house. The exhibit is seasonal; check the dates if you’d like to include it in your trip plans.

Fossils and History

At Burpee Museum, the “Jane: Diary of a Dinosaur” exhibit features the fully restored, 21-foot-long skeleton of a juvenile T. rex. This distinctive encounter with paleontology brings together a specific exhibit and its impressive size. The museum has also hosted PaleoFest since 1999: a three-day paleontology program featuring educational offerings and activities. Dates and programming may vary from year to year.

Those interested in historic places can explore Midway Village and its 26 historic buildings. Macktown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These details offer a different way to experience the region than its nature trails or exhibits, focusing instead on historic buildings and a site’s inclusion on the register. Together with the gardens, trails and nature offerings, they provide a variety of themes to shape your trip around your personal interests.
