Joliet reveals itself from different perspectives: exhibitions tell the story of the city’s development, its residents and its industrial history; there is also architecture, railroad history and nature. This gives you a clear set of options when planning your trip: you can focus on museums and historic sites or include nature experiences, rather than choosing every destination based on the same theme.

Museums and Stories from Joliet

The Joliet Area Historical Museum is located in the former Ottawa Street Methodist Church, at the intersection of Cass Street and Ottawa Street in downtown. Since opening in fall 2002, its main exhibition has offered insights into the stories of the Joliet area and its residents. The city’s early development is also explored: permanent exhibitions trace it through the Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Other exhibitions have their own distinct focuses. The diner scene at the Route 66 Welcome Center features actual historic images of Route 66 in Joliet. Made in Joliet showcases objects made in the city, including a rare 1909 Economy Motor Buggy. Routes of Agency explores how Black residents of the South End built a vibrant, self-sustaining community during the Great Migration. Together, these exhibitions offer different ways to explore transportation, local manufacturing and community history.

Immigration and everyday life also have dedicated spaces. The Martin & Emma Planinsek Grocery and Meat Market Museum explores the experience of Slovenian immigrants in Joliet and recreates a corner store that operated from 1926 to 1961. The Slovenian Woman's Heritage Museum preserves Slovenian cultural heritage and honors immigrants who settled in the region. The two sites emphasize different aspects: one focuses on the experience of Slovenian immigrants and a store from a particular period; the other on heritage and honoring immigrants.

Architecture, Theater and Railroad History

The Rialto Square Theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours include the Esplanade, Rotunda, stage and Green Room. Check tour dates and availability before visiting. The historic Hiram B. Scutt Mansion is described as a Civil War house and Joliet’s last limestone building. The P. Seth Magosky Museum of Victorian Life & Joliet History is an architectural resource center and a museum of Victorian life. Old Joliet Prison was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2023.

The Joliet Railroad Museum offers a different perspective on architectural history: it is housed in a former interlocking tower dating to around 1913, which was preserved and incorporated into the Gateway Center Train Station. From the tower’s third floor, visitors can watch trains from every direction. The combination of former railroad infrastructure and train watching makes this museum a distinct attraction alongside the exhibitions on city and immigration history.

Nature and Trails

The Joliet Iron Works Historic Site covers 52 acres and offers a glimpse into the region’s industrial past in a natural setting along the Des Plaines River. Here, landscape and industrial history exist side by side. The paved Joliet Junction Trail offers a different focus: it extends 4.36 miles south from Crest Hill through Joliet. Both places add nature to the mix, but only the Historic Site is explicitly connected with the region’s industrial history.

Pilcher Park is known for high-quality mesic and wet-mesic upland forests, seep spring communities, striking spring wildflowers and old trees. The Pilcher Park Nature Center offers hiking, biking and cross-country skiing on scenic trails. The center’s educational programs include hikes and hands-on activities. Pilcher Park thus brings together natural features and activities: protected habitats and old trees define its natural character, while the trails offer different ways to spend time in the park.
