Piatt can be explored through two compelling themes: railway history and the landscapes along the Sangamon River. In Monticello, historic architecture adds another perspective on the region, while parks, nature reserves, and trails offer different highlights. If you’d like to explore buildings and collections, you’ll find specific places to start, as you will if you’re interested in river landscapes and nature watching.

Railways and Architecture in Monticello

The Monticello Railway Museum is home to more than 70 historic trains, including steam and diesel locomotives. The collection may change. Train rides may begin at Nelson Crossing Depot, the museum’s main location, or at Wabash Depot in downtown Monticello. If the starting point matters to your plans, check current operations before your trip.

The museum’s history dates back to 1966, when it was founded with the goal of operating steam-powered excursion rides for passengers. Beyond the trains, Monticello’s architecture is also worth exploring. The Piatt County Courthouse was built in 1903–04 in the Greek Revival style.

The North State Street Historic District offers another glimpse into local history. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and can be explored on foot; visitors are asked to use the public sidewalks. It encompasses 76 buildings, 56 of which contribute to the historic district. These figures provide a concrete sense of scale for a walk, while the sidewalks define the intended way to explore the area.

River, Woodlands, and Open Landscapes

A variety of landscapes come together at Allerton Park: the Sangamon River, floodplains, lowland and upland forests, a meadow, and prairies. The park also has more than 15 miles of hiking trails. It’s also a special place for birdwatching: more than 210 bird species have been recorded there, and further sightings may change the species count.

The McCraw Family Visitor Center offers brief information about the history of the estate, its gardens and natural areas, as well as park maps. Check the Visitor Center’s current visitor guidelines before your trip. This lets you plan information about the park and its landscapes as separate points of reference for your visit.

Along the Sangamon River, the Upper Sangamon River Land and Water Reserve borders the southeastern part of Allerton Park. The reserve protects a section of the river, its adjoining riparian corridor, and habitat on higher ground. Another place to experience the river is Lodge Park, a 500-acre park on the Sangamon River.

The Shady Rest Land and Water Reserve protects about 0.25 miles of the Sangamon River, along with floodplain and upland forest. The river section at Shady Rest is recognized in the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory as a biologically significant stream with outstanding aquatic resources (INAI No. 1449). The approximate length and the recognition describe different aspects of this protected area: its extent along the river and the importance of its aquatic resources.

The Jasmine Hollow Land and Water Reserve also stretches along the Sangamon River: it consists mostly of floodplain forest and includes a mile of the river. At least 11 freshwater mussel species and the threatened mudpuppy live there; further wildlife sightings may be added. Access is available only with prior approval through guided tours and events offered by the Land Conservation Foundation.

Trails and Nature Watching

The Sangamon River Corridor Reserve offers opportunities for birdwatching, fishing, and nature watching. Along the Bruce Hannon Levee Trail, the Prairie State Hike app adds information and photos at twelve stops, and an interactive map shows your location. Digital offerings may be updated, so it’s worth checking the latest app version before your walk.

The Bruce Hannon Levee Trail is 2.3 miles long. The Sangamon River Corridor Reserve also has an easy, unpaved trail with three small stream fords. This offers two distinct trail experiences: a route with a specified length and a trail with fords. Trail conditions can change after storms or flooding.

The Piatt County Trail Blazers Arena offers a very different experience. The permanent arena has bucking and timed-event lanes, bleachers, and an announcer’s stand. The Trail Blazers also serve a seasonal breakfast open to the public on Sunday mornings from November through February. Confirm the specific dates and operating schedule before visiting.
