Along the Rock River, Ogle County’s landscape is especially tangible: at Lowden-Miller State Forest, wooded river frontage stretches for 3.5 miles, lined by bluffs up to 120 feet high. Castle Rock State Park lies on the river’s west bank, three miles south of Oregon. There is a public boat launch there for accessing the Rock River by canoe or kayak. At Lowden State Park, meanwhile, the bluffs offer views of the river.

Trails through the woods and along the water

When planning your route, it’s worth considering the full name: Lowden-Miller State Forest has about 22 miles of maintained trails for hiking and cross-country skiing; Lowden State Park offers almost four miles of foot trails. At Lowden-Miller State Forest, the self-guided Loggers Trails nature trail is 1.5 miles long. There is also an equestrian parking area and designated horseback riding trails. This gives you several ways to explore the landscape on trails, from cross-country skiing to horseback riding.

White Pines Forest has more distinctive features to discover. Visitors can drive through flowing streams at concrete fords. At White Pines Forest Nature Preserve, roads and trails are part of the park’s trail network. It is also home to the largest naturalized stand of eastern white pines in Illinois, which is thought to be the southernmost naturally occurring stand of this species in the Midwest. The Joe Eichholz Memorial Nature Trail is a 0.5-mile, wheelchair-accessible trail with a gravel surface.

Experience and understand the prairie

Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve protects remnants of a dry-mesic dolomite prairie with oak savanna characteristics. The Jarrett Prairie Center provides parking, trail access and hiking maps for the preserve. A 2,600-square-foot wraparound observation deck is located outdoors at the center. At the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum, an immersive theater about local prairie ecology, more than 4,000 square feet of exhibit space and hands-on learning activities introduce visitors to the subject.

There is an important access restriction to keep in mind at Nachusa Grasslands: the preserve itself is not open to the public. However, there is a public viewing area and interpretive displays. The nearly 1,000-acre preserve is home to a free-roaming herd of bison and forms the core of a larger restored prairie ecosystem. The access rules and viewing opportunities go hand in hand: the viewing area and displays offer the public a way to engage with the landscape without suggesting that the preserve itself is open to the public.

Architecture, art and history

In Oregon, the Ogle County Courthouse makes an architectural statement: the Romanesque Revival building was completed in 1891 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the north lawn, the Soldier’s Monument, designed by Lorado Taft, commemorates the men of Ogle County who served in the Civil War. Also on the lawn is the Oregon Lincoln Highway Interpretive Gazebo, at the intersection of Route 2 and Route 64.

Another notable work by Taft is the Blackhawk Statue. Including its six-foot-high base, it stands almost 50 feet tall; its weight is estimated at 100 tons. It is thought to be the world’s second-largest monolithic concrete statue. The story of the Eagle’s Nest Art Colony offers another way to explore the region: it began as a summer retreat for working together, exchanging ideas and socializing, and continued until the death of its last original member in 1942. Oregon Public Library houses more than fifty paintings and sculptures donated by members of the artists’ colony. The Oregon Sculpture Trail offers a descriptive route for viewing public sculptures in Oregon.

Rural life and education also have their place. The Heritage Farm Museum comprises five restored farm buildings that illustrate early rural life, and offers a free, self-guided tour of the Grout House. Lorado Taft Campus is a 141-acre university center for outdoor education and conferences. The Ogle County Farm Stroll is one of the Master Gardeners’ annual fall traditions; if you plan to attend, check the specific event dates before your trip.

Choose cycling routes by distance

For a ride along a former railroad line, the Joe Stengel Trail runs for seven miles between Polo and Woosung. Three cycling routes also start in Oregon, covering 10, 32 or 62 miles; the routes are unpaved. The different distances give you a practical guide to choosing a route without requiring you to commit to a particular ride length.
