Wenona offers several specific options for planning a visit: recreation at City Park and City Pond, history related to coal mining, and recurring events. The offerings vary by activity, historical connection, and timing, making it easy to choose a focus for your visit.

Recreation at City Park and City Pond

Wenona City Park has a regulation-size baseball field and a covered pavilion with picnic tables. Baseball and a sheltered place for a picnic are the park’s clearly identified amenities. There is a walking trail at Wenona City Pond, where fishing is also possible. You can borrow a fishing rod from the Wenona Bond Library. The pond is also suitable for a picnic. Walking, fishing, and picnicking are separate options at the pond; borrowing a fishing rod is a practical planning option for fishing.

Coal Mining and Historical Dates

The Wenona Coal Co. closed its mine in 1925. Starting in April 1958, a Cold War radar station was developed on the slag heap of the former mine. The Wenona Coal Mine Historical Site was dedicated on August 10, 2018, by members of the Wenona Historical Society during the Wenona Days celebration. These dates mark different chapters: the mine’s closure, the development of the radar station, and the later dedication of the historical site. The radar station is also geographically linked to the earlier mining operation, as it was developed on its slag heap.

Hillside Trail, Information Panels, and Views

A short hike in Wenona’s Coal Miners Memorial Park goes up and back down the hill. Information panels at the foot and summit of the hill cover the history of the Jumbo Jaunt. The trail combines exercise with a specific historical subject, with panels at two points on the hill. The park also offers views of farmland, a windmill, open spaces, and Wenona below the park. This combination of a short hillside trail, information panels, and views differs from the offerings at City Pond.

Events Throughout the Year

Wenona Days takes place every year in Wenona. Taste of Wenona and Cruise Night are annual events held in July. If one of these festivals is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates before you arrive. The 2020 Wenona Days program included live music and food trucks; these details apply to that year’s program and are not fixed features of other editions.

Moore School

Moore School was founded on April 21, 1855. Its founding date predates the mine’s closure in 1925 and adds another historical reference point to the mining history. The school can be visited by appointment arranged in advance through City Hall. If you would like to include Moore School, plan to arrange an appointment through City Hall in advance.
