At Tekakwitha Woods, oak-maple woodland, floodplain forest, and restored prairie vary with the terrain. An oak there dates to 1864; the Fox River Trail runs along the preserve’s eastern boundary. These distinctive landscapes and places shape discoveries in Kane—from observing nature to exploring historic homes and structures.

Woodlands, Trails, and Nature Watching

The Kane County forest preserve system includes more than 23,000 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and prairies across nearly 100 sites. Three distinct landscapes can be found at Tekakwitha Woods: oak-maple woodland grows on higher ground, floodplain forest along the river, and restored prairie on former farmland. The oak dating to 1864 provides a specific historical reference point.

The Great Western Trail passes through streams and wetlands where ducks, coots, and great blue herons nest and raise their young. The Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve offers opportunities for hiking and birdwatching in a wooded setting. These different nature experiences sit side by side: habitats along waterways and wetlands, as well as woodland trails and birdwatching.

The routes also offer clear points of reference. At Raymond Street Forest Preserve, a tunnel beneath the railroad tracks connects the Fox River Trail to the Elgin Branch of the Illinois Prairie Path. The Riverbend Bike Trail heads south to a natural waterfall eight feet high, which plunges into a clear, babbling stream and pools there. Fabyan Forest Preserve is located along the Fox River; at Voyageur Landing Forest Preserve, a boat launch provides access to water activities. Seasonal water conditions may affect use.

Homes, a School, and a Windmill

The Durant-Peterson House Museum brings history to life, depicting the lifestyle and furnishings of the 1840s. The Durant House Museum was built in 1843. Pioneer Sholes School is an authentically restored and furnished one-room country school. Its collection includes school texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, early official Kane County education records, and oral histories about one-room schools.

Fabyan Villa Museum has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. The complete tour of both floors is led by a knowledgeable guide. Fabyan Windmill is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places; tours explain how it works. They take place on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., from the first Sunday in June through the last Sunday in September. Check the schedule in advance if you plan to take a tour during this time period.

More Experiences

The area also offers activities with distinct focuses. Arrowwood Point Archery Complex provides areas for recreational archery, bowhunter practice, and crossbow use. Check permit requirements before using the facility. Big Rock Forest Preserve has an area for horseback riding.

At Peck Farm Park, hundreds of non-native butterflies fly, feed, and land around visitors. An environmental education playground features eight learning stations; the Interpretive Center offers programs for students of all ages. The butterflies, learning stations, and educational programs each offer their own focus and are not all the same type of experience.

Rural Transition and Designated Roads

Brundidge Road lies on the edge of the city of Geneva, creates a transition to the rural surroundings, and preserves Kane County’s agricultural heritage. Brundidge Road, Ke-De-Ka Road, and Thurnau Road are designated Rustic Roads in Kane County. Alongside preserves, trails, and historic places, these roads have their own designated significance in the region.
