Discover Henry County through two defining features: the long Hennepin Canal and the history of Bishop Hill, founded in 1846 as a utopian religious community. The county also has a glacier-carved landscape of rolling hills, museums in Kewanee and Galva, and outdoor activities. You can explore cultural history, canal paths, park visits and golf as different focuses for your trip.

Exploring the Hennepin Canal

The Hennepin Canal State Trail is a 104.5-mile linear park that spans five Illinois counties, including Henry County. The towpath is described as 155 miles long: it offers opportunities for hiking and cycling from the Illinois River to the Rock River; a feeder canal path also leads to Rock Falls. The two figures refer to differently named parts of the trail and should not be treated as the same length when planning.

The Hennepin Canal is open to boating and canoeing. Its locks are no longer in operation and must be bypassed overland. As operating conditions may change seasonally, check current conditions before setting out. The Green Rock Memorial Bike Path also runs along the canal and provides another specific bike-path name to help you find your way.

Rolling Hills and Winter Activities

Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area lies on a glacial moraine that forms Henry County’s gently rolling landscape. The area covers 1,365 acres and offers cross-country skiing. Alongside activities on the canal, it offers a distinct focus: the landscape’s geological formation and a winter sport shape how you experience the region.

Bishop Hill: Founding History and Architecture

The history of Bishop Hill begins with Eric Janson (1808–1850), a Swedish Pietist who founded the settlement with his followers in 1846 as a utopian religious community. The Bishop Hill Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984. Four historically significant buildings are owned by the State of Illinois and administered as part of the Bishop Hill State Historic Site.

The site includes the Colony Church, built in 1848, a two-story timber-frame building. Another architectural landmark is the Bishop Hill Heritage Association’s Steeple Building: the three-story structure has 24 rooms and was built in the Greek Revival style. It houses the organization’s main museum, offices and archives. The two buildings illustrate different construction methods and uses within the historic site.

The Henry County Museum in Bishop Hill presents the county’s history with exhibits on a steam engine, tools, clothing and quilts, as well as a recreated general store and harness shop. The Colony Store stocks Swedish foods and provides a sales outlet for local artisans. Everyday objects and local products thus complement the history of the founding community.

Recurring events at the Bishop Hill State Historic Site include Jordbruksdagarna, a traditional harvest festival modeled on the 19th century. The program includes demonstrations of harvesting and processing crops. Dates and programming may change; check current event details before your trip.

Museums, Parks and Events in Kewanee and Galva

At the Robert and Marcella Richards Museum in Kewanee, an exhibit covers the Kewanee Boiler Company. It includes several hundred photographs of the factory and its employees, along with artifacts and memorabilia, including miniature boilers and numerous scrapbooks. At Windmont Park, a walking path with additional walking and exercise stations circles the pond; fishing is permitted in the pond and from a pier. Chatauqua Park adds to Kewanee’s recreational offerings with a 12-hole disc golf course.

Galva’s Veterans Park has walking paths with History Walk information panels. The Galva Historical Society operates a museum in Galva in the original Wiley family home and preserves historical publications such as the magazine GalvaLand. Galva’s summer and fall events include the Levitt AMP Music Series and the Backroads Music Festival. As event dates may change, check the latest information before making plans.

Golf and Road Access

Valley View Club is an 18-hole golf course south of Cambridge, Illinois, in a rural setting. Five sets of tees range from 3,163 to 6,393 yards. As course details may change, check current information when planning a visit to the club.
