Lewis County offers a variety of reasons to visit: historic sites, museums, an annual celebration in July, and the landscape of the Camas Prairie. First decide which themes you want to shape your stay.

Explore Places and Landscapes

At Heart of the Monster, you can hike and picnic. There are no admission fees for these activities, and no reservation or National Park Service permit is required. The site is open daily year-round from sunrise to sunset. Check local notices for temporary closures before your visit.

Winchester Lake State Park is a small, wooded oasis in the heart of the Camas Prairie. It offers a scenic counterpoint to the historical and cultural themes visitors can explore in Lewis County.

History Around Kamiah

Lewis and Clark Long Camp marks the site of a Nez Perce camp where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1805–06. Another leg of the expedition brought the group near present-day Kamiah, where they lived with the Nez Perce for four weeks, from May 14 to June 10. These two dates refer to different stays and offer several points of reference for the area's history.

A marker and interpretive signs for Lewis and Clark Long Camp are at a pullout on U.S. Highway 12, about one mile east of Kamiah. A historic marker for the Asa Smith Mission is also on U.S. Highway 12, about one mile east of Kamiah. The mission site itself is on private property and is not open to the public. The marker and the mission are therefore distinct points of reference for the area's history.

In April 1839, Asa Smith and his wife established a mission in the Kamiah area; the Smiths left the area in 1841. If you are exploring this period in local history, the access restriction is important: the mission itself is not open to public visits.

Museums and Local Culture

The Winchester Museum was founded in 1966 after the Craig Mountain Lumber Company closed its sawmill. Topics on display include the Camas Prairie Railroad; individual exhibits may change. The Nezperce Museum & Historical Society preserves the history of the Nezperce Prairie through artifacts, photographs, family histories, and keepsakes. The two museums offer different ways to explore the region's history: one focuses on the railroad and the past associated with the sawmill, while the other has a collection that also includes family histories and keepsakes.

The Kamiah Historical Society and Museum is located at 518 Main Street. Its collection includes mammoth bones found on Sig Grove's property on the edge of town. Confirm current visitor arrangements before visiting. For a different kind of hands-on experience, River Arts in Kamiah offers free classes and open participation projects. These cultural activities for exploring and learning complement the collections and historic sites.

Events and Accommodation Planning

Nezperce Prairie Day takes place annually on the second Friday and Saturday in July; the exact dates can vary from year to year. If you choose the celebration as the reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant year. This helps distinguish a fixed event date from visits that are not tied to a particular weekend.

Visiting conditions also vary: Heart of the Monster has daily hours from sunrise to sunset, while the Asa Smith Mission is not open to the public, and museum visits are subject to each museum's arrangements. When looking for hotels in Lewis County, it helps to decide first whether a July date, the history around Kamiah, the museum collections, or the Camas Prairie will be the focus. Then plan around the specific visiting hours and dates.
