At Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, discovery begins with an unusual contrast: the monument preserves one of the world’s most significant fossil sites from the Pliocene, yet the sites themselves are not open to the public. Fossils, River Views, and Trails
Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument is located in Gooding County and Twin Falls County in southern Idaho. Sand cliffs, basalt canyons, waterfalls, and hot springs shape the landscape. Fossil history and varied natural scenery sit side by side, even though the sites themselves are not places to visit.
At Snake River Overlook, the view stretches across the Snake River to the fossil sites on the other side. Oregon Trail Overlook leads to historic wagon ruts from the Oregon Trail and the Emigrant Trail. Both overlooks bring together landscape and history, but each has a different emphasis: one opens up views of the river and fossil sites, while the other reveals traces of the Oregon Trail and a route with historical significance.
The southernmost trail at Oster Lake offers another perspective. From there, you can take in panoramic views of the Snake River, Gridley Island, and Hagerman Valley. If you choose trails primarily for their views, these three specific sights are the focus here; the landscape can be read differently from the river overlooks.
Canyons and Striking Water Landscapes
Little City of Rocks Wilderness Study Area is in Gooding County, within the Mount Bennett Hills. The name refers to an area in this mountain landscape and adds another protected natural area to the region’s varied scenery. Niagara Springs offers a striking sight of its own: the spring plunges down the canyon wall at 250 cubic feet per second. This specific water flow makes the force of the falls easy to imagine, without the need for an extended comparison.
County History and Culture in Gooding
At the Gooding County Historical Museum, you can learn about the county’s history. The Hagerman Valley Sheep Monument focuses on a more specific part of the past: it commemorates more than 130 years of sheep raising and sheep farming in the area around Hagerman. Together, the museum and monument offer two different ways to explore the past—one focused on county history, the other on a defining tradition in the Hagerman area.
Gooding’s cultural life also offers its own points of interest. The Gooding Pro Rodeo has a tradition spanning more than a century and includes events such as bucking and roping competitions, as well as horse racing. The Gooding Basque Association promotes Basque culture through food, dance, language, and other activities. In this way, sporting competitions and cultural education stand side by side as different forms of local tradition.

Winter Activities
Gooding County Snow Park is on the border between Gooding County and Camas County. It covers 150 square miles of BLM and private land for snowmobiling and other winter activities. This makes it quite different from the trails and overlooks: winter exploration is the focus here, and conditions are seasonal.
