Since the 1930s, the Emmett Cherry Festival has brought the community of Emmett and all of Gem County together every June. Alongside this lively tradition, historic buildings and the wetlands and ponds of the Montour Wildlife/Recreation Management Area offer quite different discoveries. This brings festival culture, architectural history, and nature together when planning a trip, without letting any one theme overshadow the others.

Cherry Season and Community Life

The Emmett Cherry Festival takes place during the second full week of June. Traditional events, concerts, and the fair are held Wednesday through Saturday at Emmett City Park. If you want to plan your trip around a particular festival day, check the specific event dates in advance. This long-standing tradition connects Emmett with all of Gem County and gives June a special sense of community.

The Emmett Farmers Market also puts cherries in the spotlight in June: mostly cherries, along with some vegetables, are available then. The market is held at Blaser Park in downtown Emmett. The festival and market have different focuses: the program here features events, concerts, and a fair, while seasonal produce shapes the market there.

Events at various venues offer further glimpses of community life. The Gem County Harvest Festival Street Fair focuses on local agriculture, live music, and free film screenings. During the Gem/Boise County Fair, the PRCA Black Canyon Stock Show & Rodeo takes place at the Gem County Fairgrounds. The Burkhard-Stewart Building is part of community events such as the Christmas parade, Harvest Festival, Cherry Festival parade, and homecoming parade.

Architectural History and Places of Remembrance

The Gem County Historical Society and Museum, also known as the Gem County Historical Village Museum, comprises five buildings. The complex is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Gem County. The museum includes the Hunt House, now an exhibit featuring possessions of Governor Hunt and his family. The museum is open year-round and admission is free; regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visits are also available by appointment. Check the hours before your visit if you plan to include the museum in your itinerary.

Individual buildings also tell stories about the county’s history and design. The Gem County Courthouse was built in 1938–1939. The concrete building features a relatively restrained Classical Art Deco style. The Sweet Methodist Episcopal Church dates from 1905. Local residents who were familiar with the traditional Gothic Revival design of rural Protestant churches helped build it.

The Oregon Short Line Railway Depot, also known as the Emmett Depot, is at the north end of Commercial Avenue in downtown Emmett. Southeast of it is the small triangular Railroad Park, with lawns and mature trees. Thus, at the same named location, a historic railway station and a landscaped park sit side by side. The Freezeout Hill Monument was erected in 1928; the Ola Schoolhouse hosts numerous community events. These places offer different perspectives on built history and local community life.

Wetlands and Outdoor Activities

Above Black Canyon Reservoir, the Montour Wildlife/Recreation Management Area includes a 1.7-square-mile, or 1,105-acre, area of wetlands and ponds. Visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing there. The adjacent Payette River is a separate place to fish. Those who compare nature and history will find a clear change of theme here: from architectural heritage and community events to a landscape shaped by wetlands and ponds.
