Lakeview Park is Nampa’s oldest park and covers more than 44 acres. It includes the man-made Lake Ethel, originally built to store irrigation water from Mason Creek. Lakeview Water Park offers a beach-style entry, water spray areas and a two-story slide. These features make the park a different kind of destination from a stroll along one of the city’s walking paths.

The municipal park system includes 27 parks and 14 miles of walking paths. Nampa also has two StoryWalk® trails: one at Lakeview Park and one in the park at Harward Recreation Center. StoryWalk® features reading stations along a walking route about half a mile long. Harward Recreation Center is a 140,000-square-foot indoor facility with a variety of recreational amenities open to the public. The options therefore range from trails in park settings to activities in an indoor recreation facility.

Nature and Trails at Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge protects the Lake Lowell Unit and the Snake River Islands Unit. It encompasses a nearly 9,000-acre lake and more than 10 miles of trails. Fishing, boating and swimming are available at Lake Lowell; activities in the Refuge’s uplands include hiking, birdwatching, hunting, picnicking and watching sunsets. This distinction helps with planning: water-based activities take center stage at the lake, while the uplands offer other nature experiences.

The Kingfisher Trail runs through the Refuge along the wooded shore of Lake Lowell and through sagebrush-covered uplands. The Observation Hill Trail is a dog-friendly loop that leads to an observation platform on Observation Hill. The birdlife is characterized by breeding colonies of Western and Clark’s grebes, as well as flocks of migrating and wintering mallards and Canada geese. These observations therefore relate to different seasons.

Historic Neighborhoods and Culture

Historic Downtown Nampa is a well-preserved district that is easy to explore on foot, with Library Square at its center. The Nampa Historic District is a commercial historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ten of its buildings represent a brief period of significant commercial development in Nampa between 1905 and 1920.

By contrast, the Old Nampa Neighborhood Historic District comprises 243 homes. The National Park Service approved its listing on the National Register of Historic Places on March 21, 2007. A former passenger depot tells another chapter of the city’s history: completed in September 1903, it now houses the Canyon County Historical Society Museum. The Nampa History Collection complements this perspective with historic photographs, oral history interviews and curated exhibits about the community’s people, businesses and development.

Warhawk Air Museum was founded to preserve history and educate future generations about American veterans and their contributions to civil liberties. Group, club and educational tours must be arranged at least two weeks before the visit date. If you’re planning one of these tours, allow for this lead time. The Nampa Arts & Historic Preservation Commission also presents a self-guided walking tour; the digital map is updated quarterly and the flyer annually. Wall Street Alley’s murals feature a family-friendly scavenger hunt.

Events and Regional Products

Historic Downtown Nampa hosts seasonal festivals, street fairs, art walks, historic tours, holiday markets and cultural events. Dates vary; check them if a particular event is meant to determine your travel dates. About 200 artists and craftspeople take part in the Nampa Festival of the Arts. Ford Idaho Horse Park is the venue for the Snake River Stampede Rodeo. The Snake River Stampede is the rodeo portion of the former Harvest Festival and continues to this day; its event dates also vary.

The Nampa Farmer’s Market also offers a specific regional connection: the products sold there come from within a 100-mile radius. You can tailor your plans in Nampa to your interests: park and nature trails, historic neighborhoods and museums, or a visit timed around a seasonal festival.
