Explore Naples through three distinct themes: nature around McArthur Lake, the snowmobile trail system in the Roman Nose Area, and local history. When choosing where to stay, you can first decide which of these themes you want to shape your trip.

Nature Around McArthur Lake

McArthur Lake lies south of Naples in the Deep Creek watershed. Below the McArthur Lake Dam, Trail Creek joins Deep Creek from the east and Fall Creek from the west, near Naples. The two tributaries can be clearly distinguished; their directions also show how the waterways extend from the area around the lake to near Naples.

The area around McArthur Lake is an important connecting corridor for high-elevation wildlife species, including fisher, grizzly bear, lynx, and wolverine. The corridor describes the area’s ecological role and draws attention to the connections between habitats, rather than just individual animal species. For travelers who want to focus on nature, this offers a distinct perspective on the area around the lake.

The McArthur Lake Wildlife Management Area is Site 7 on the Idaho Birding Trail. For bird enthusiasts, this provides a specific point of reference: the wildlife corridor describes the area’s ecological role, while the Birding Trail marks a focus specifically on birds. Check the latest site information before visiting.

Winter Trails in the Roman Nose Area

A map from November 2020 identifies the Roman Nose Area as a snowmobile trail system. Check current winter conditions before planning your trip. The routes in the Roman Nose Snowmobile Trail System cross land owned by several different owners; users must stay on designated trails. When planning around this activity, both the seasonal status and the designated trails matter.

Local History in Naples

The Naples General Store was built by the Mackey brothers at its present location in 1934 and has changed little since it was built. Its construction date, builders, and limited changes provide a tangible point of reference for local history. The first Naples Elementary school was established around 1892, burned down in 1914, and was replaced by a brick building in 1932. Unlike the store, its story centers on a sequence of establishment, fire, and replacement; about four decades separate the school’s establishment from the brick building.

The old Wild Horse Trail passed through Naples. Near Naples, CCC Camp No. 124 reopened for the 1935 season. Together, a historic route through town and a camp near Naples add further themes of local history to the story of the store’s construction.

Naples School was a large rural community school with several rooms and levels and served the Naples community. Its role as a community school complements the timeline of the first Naples Elementary by highlighting the school’s importance to the community.
