The Teton Scenic Byway begins at the Snake River in Swan Valley. The river, mountains and trails give the area a variety of character: Fall Creek plunges into the South Fork, while named trails highlight river views, lakes or canyons. For planning, it helps to distinguish between these different features. Would you like to explore a scenic route, learn more about the river landscape or discover trails nearby? The following places and activities offer different ways to get started.

River Landscape and Mountain Views

Fall Creek plunges into the South Fork of the Snake River just upstream from Swan Valley Bridge. The river is home to 126 bird species, including 21 raptor species. The mountains also shape the scenery: the Big Hole Range lies north of Swan Valley, the Caribou Mountains to the south and the Palisades Range to the east. The Palisades Reservoir is known for boating, fishing and other recreational activities. The landscape therefore encompasses not only the river but also mountain views and the reservoir area.

Choose Trails by the Scenery

The Canyon Rim Trail runs from Black Canyon upstream to Dry Canyon and offers views of the river below. Nearby, the Palisades Creek Trail takes hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders to Upper Palisades Lake and expansive views of Swan Valley. Also nearby, the Big Elk Creek Trail begins at Big Elk Campground. It takes hikers, cyclists and horseback riders through a canyon with wildflowers, tall trees and views of the surrounding mountains.

The destinations described here are quite distinct: the Canyon Rim Trail focuses on views of the river, the Palisades Creek Trail on the lake and views of Swan Valley, and the Big Elk Creek Trail on canyon scenery. This can help you choose trails based on the scenery that interests you, rather than just the activity listed. There are also various trails in the Targhee National Forest in the Swan Valley area and along the South Fork.

Byway, Water Access and Seasonal Planning

The Teton Scenic Byway begins in Swan Valley at the Snake River, heads northeast to Victor, then continues north through Driggs to Ashton. Road conditions and access may vary seasonally; take this into account when planning and check conditions before setting out. From Swan Valley, Jackson Hole, including Grand Teton National Park and the Teton Range, as well as neighboring Yellowstone National Park, are about a 45-minute drive over mountain passes. Actual travel time depends on the route and conditions.

Water access points also have distinct locations. The South Fork River Corridor begins in Swan Valley, off Highway 26 near Palisades Dam. Conant Boat Access is on Conant Valley Loop in Swan Valley, just off the Swan Valley Highway. Access details may change; confirm them before your visit. A 2022 city plan also notes more than 400 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the Swan Valley area. This adds a distinct winter focus to the river, reservoir and trail offerings.

Swan Valley combines a named scenic byway with specific river and trail destinations; the places mentioned also span different scales, from the waterfall on the South Fork to regional parks reached over mountain passes. Use these distinctions to guide your trip planning and then find suitable hotels.
