A historic trail along the Weiser River ran through what is now Adams County and became the main pack-train route from Boise to the gold camps of Warren and Florence. Pack trains carried supplies along it, making the route a testament to how the gold camps were supplied. Another Gold Rush story leads to Council: when the Thunder Mountain gold discovery sparked a mining boom in 1902, Council was the closest railroad town to the discovery and became the starting point for the Gold Rush. Together, these stories show different connections between transportation and the search for gold: here, the pack trail along the river; there, the railroad town as a place of departure.
Historic Sites and Their Stories
The Historic Pacific and Idaho Northern Railway Depot in New Meadows was built in 1910–1911. In Council, the Council Valley Museum preserves artifacts and stories from the region’s pioneer era in the former town hall. The Council Ranger Station was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1936 and reflects the town’s connection to public land management. The construction dates of the depot and ranger station place these two sites in different historical contexts.
