At Kauaʻi’s westernmost tip lies Polihale State Park, with a 17-mile-long beach of golden sand. Hawaiian legends connect the park with a starting point from which souls are said to set out for the spirit world. Here, a specific coastal landscape and a cultural tradition stand side by side.

Coast and Hiking Trails

Along the Nāpali Coast, emerald-green, sharply ridged cliffs above the Pacific, beaches, and waterfalls shape the landscape. Boat tours depart from Port Allen; guided kayak tours are seasonal, and raft tours take place when conditions are suitable. Hidden sea caves may be among the destinations on raft tours. If you plan one of these tours, check the season or conditions in advance.

The hiking options also offer different focuses. In Waimea Canyon State Park, hiking trails lead to Waipoʻo Falls, an 800-foot waterfall, and to viewpoints. Kōkeʻe State Park has about 45 miles of trails; native plants and elusive forest birds can also be found there. The Kalalau Trail on Kauaʻi’s North Shore, by contrast, is a single, challenging 11-mile hiking route. These figures describe two different scales: a trail network of about 45 miles in Kōkeʻe and a specific challenging route on the Kalalau Trail.

Discover the History

Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park preserves the remains of a 19th-century Russian military outpost. Exhibits and guided walks present a chapter in Hawaii’s intercultural history. Check program details before your trip. Grove Farm is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Kauaʻi Museum preserves and shares the heritage of Kauaʻi and its people through exhibits and educational programs. These include workshops in traditional arts, language classes, and cultural performances. If you would like to experience a particular format, check the current schedule in advance.

On the Historic Locomotives Tour, visitors can see and hear historic steam locomotives in motion on designated “Fire-up” days. Since tour dates are time-dependent, it’s worth checking the dates before making plans.

Gardens, Rivers, and Nature

Limahuli is one of Hawaii’s last easily accessible valleys with intact archaeological sites, native forest, and an unspoiled stream. An exploration of Limahuli in a small group brings together Hawaiian culture, biodiversity, and responsible landscape management. Limahuli Garden features a 0.75-mile loop trail with a 200-foot elevation gain and numerous stairs. Take these trail details into account when planning and check them again before your visit.

McBryde Garden is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian plants. A scheduled 2.5-hour experience allows for self-guided exploration; all tours require a shuttle from the visitor center to the garden. Check current tour details before making plans.

At Wailua River State Park, you can kayak or ride traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoes. Fern Grotto is accessible by boat from there. This offers two distinct options: trips on the river and a boat-accessible destination.

Practical Information

Līhuʻe Airport (LIH) is Kauaʻi’s main airport and is located southeast of Līhuʻe. All adults aged 16 and older need a reservation to visit Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Factor in this requirement and check the current reservation rules for your visit.
