Above Pāhala, coffee fields cover the slopes. They give the town a clear connection to Kaʻū coffee, which also features in the annual festival. Historical and cultural themes add to the picture: a largely preserved school for the plantation community, a historic house connected to the early days of coffee, and cultural sites in the surrounding area. If you’re looking for hotels in Pāhala, coffee, history, and festival dates can each shape your stay in different ways.

Kaʻū Coffee and the Festival

The Kaʻū Coffee Festival is an annual event held in Pāhala and began in 2009. The Kaʻū Coffee Experience features guided tastings: professional baristas brew coffee using different preparation methods. The samples focus on brewing and tasting. Together with the coffee fields above town, they create a connection between growing coffee in the landscape and preparing it at the festival.

The signature Ho‘olaule‘a takes place on the grounds of the Pāhala Community Center. The program features live music and hula throughout the day. The tastings and Ho‘olaule‘a offer different festival experiences: coffee preparation in one, music and hula in the other. Event details may change, so check the dates and specific program ahead of time if you plan your trip around the festival.

History and Cultural Sites

Built in the 1930s, Kau High and Pahala Elementary School is considered a largely preserved example of a rural school for the plantation community. It brings the community’s history into focus. The historic plantation manager’s house in Pāhala is connected to the town’s history and the early days of Kaʻū coffee. The school represents the plantation community; the house connects local history with the beginnings of coffee.

The Kaʻu History Collection is housed in the Pāhala Public and School Library. Library users can view it by appointment. Keep this requirement in mind when planning, and check visitor information before your trip, as appointment requirements may change.

Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling is located in Wood Valley in the Kaʻū area near Pāhala. Its 25 acres include a temple and meditation center. Visitors should park in the visitor parking lot and check in at the main temple. The arrival instructions differ from the appointment requirement for viewing the library collection.

Practical Planning

The festival and the collection offer different considerations when choosing your travel dates: the festival takes place annually, while viewing the collection requires an appointment arranged in advance. If you plan to do both, arrange the library visit separately and check the festival program ahead of time.

Pāhala Swimming Pool is closed for construction work, with reopening expected in summer 2027. If the pool is important to your stay, take the closure into account and check its status before your visit.
