Paauilo offers three specific starting points for planning a trip: vanilla experiences, historical connections, and the Hamakua Heritage Corridor Drive, which passes through the town. The vanilla offerings vary in format—from a guided walk to a farm tour and tasting, to a meal followed by a presentation. This lets you consider the focus of your stay when choosing a vacation rental.

Experience Vanilla: Plantation, Farm, and Meal

Hawaiian Vanilla Vineyard offers a bookable, guided walk through the vanilla plantation, led by an in-house Vanilla Expert. The walk through the plantation is the main focus. Check the current visitor arrangements before your trip if you plan to take this tour.

At the Hawaiian Vanilla Company’s Paauilo farm, visitors can take part in a culinary tasting and a farm tour. This format combines a farm visit with food. The plantation walk and the farm tour with tasting therefore have different focuses; which better suits your stay depends on whether you are primarily interested in the guided tour or the culinary offering. Here, too, it is advisable to check the arrangements before your trip.

The Hawaiian Vanilla Luncheon includes a vanilla-inspired meal, followed by a presentation titled “Vanilla 101.” The offering thus combines a meal and a themed presentation in a set order. Menu offerings may change; if you’re coming for the meal, check the current selection in advance. The Hawaiian Vanilla Company Sweet Shop also offers Hawaiian Vanilla Ice Cream. The Sweet Shop selection may also change. Compared with the Luncheon, this is a single ice cream treat rather than a meal followed by a presentation.

Historical Connections in Paauilo

One historical turning point dates to 1913: Paauilo and Kukaiau separated from Honokaa because transportation was difficult and the number of Japanese immigrants was increasing rapidly. This history gives the town’s name a specific connection to the transportation conditions and population changes of the time.

Another connection to the plantation era is the Hamakua Mill Company, which was located in Paauilo on the Hamakua Coast. The Paʻauilo Store is also part of the town’s past everyday life: it was known for its takeout meals over the years, but is now closed.

The Paauilo Hongwanji Mission has hosted Bon Dances on multiple occasions; dates had been scheduled for July 12, 2025, and August 1, 2026. Both dates have passed. If you want to plan a trip around a future Bon Dance, confirm the next date locally.

Route and Overnight Planning

The Hamakua Heritage Corridor Drive passes through Paauilo, making it a specific reference point when planning your trip along this corridor. Road conditions can change; check them before driving. For overnight planning, it helps to first decide the reason for your stay: are you mainly interested in the vanilla offerings, the historical connections, or the drive?

If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Paauilo, you can match this priority with your planned visits. Check the visitor arrangements for specific activities, and confirm the date if you’re traveling for a Bon Dance.
