Santa Rosa Beach offers several different ways to plan a stay focused on nature and culture. At Western Lake, fishing and paddling are options; trails pass through coastal forest and other landscapes, while the historic Wesley House offers a focus on cultural history. For your planning, what you would like to experience is not the only consideration: whether water activities, trails or a guided tour matters more to you is important too.

Western Lake and trails through varied landscapes

Western Lake is a 100-acre coastal dune lake surrounded by the natural areas of Grayton Beach State Park. Fishing and paddling are possible activities there. The lake thus pairs a specific size with two different ways to spend time on the water. When planning your nature-focused stay, you can consider these activities as a focus of their own and compare them with the trail options.

At Grayton Beach State Park, four miles of trails pass through a coastal forest. Point Washington State Forest offers a longer and more varied selection of trails: More than 27 miles of trails pass through coastal scrub, wet prairie, swampland and open longleaf pine forests. The state forest covers 15,000 acres. The trail lengths and landscape types make the comparison clear: coastal forest trails here are set against a wider selection of different habitats. The trail lengths convert to around six kilometers in the park and more than 43 kilometers in the state forest.

The Timpoochee Trail offers another perspective on distance. It passes through recreation areas, state parks and a state forest, and runs alongside 15 rare coastal dune lakes. The trail is named after Timpoochee Kinnard, an influential chief of the Euchee tribe. Thus, this trail plan also includes a specific story behind its name, in addition to its landscapes.

History and visit planning

Eden Gardens State Park includes the historic Wesley House. Tours of the house are offered hourly from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday through Monday. This gives you a specific time frame to work with if you would like to include a visit to the house. Check the schedule before your visit so your plans for the day align with the available tour times.

Transport and suitable accommodation

The 393 Beach Park and Ride in Santa Rosa Beach is connected to Walton County’s free Beach Tram service. If you plan to use the service, check the latest service information before traveling, as arrangements may change.

Trail lengths, tour times and transport services are different points of reference, not parts of an automatically connected route. When searching for hotels in Santa Rosa Beach, therefore, consider what you actually plan to do and take into account the timing and service information relevant to your choice.
