South Daytona appeals to travelers with a distinctive mix of park trails, waterfront attractions and local stories. Options range from Reed Canal Park to fishing piers on the Halifax River and in two parks, as well as the concrete street course at Stone Edge Skatepark. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether walks, fishing, activities on wheels or local history should shape your free time. The locations offer distinct points of reference for each.

Parks, Trails and Waterfronts

Reed Canal Park covers 30 acres and surrounds a large pond. Its natural area has shell-covered walking trails. These differ from the short walkways described elsewhere in South Daytona, giving a walk here its own character.

Blaine O’Neal Park covers eleven acres, including a three-acre lake. It is home to largemouth bass, sunfish and other fish species. Riverfront Veterans Memorial Park has a fishing pier on the Halifax River; pavilions are also available to rent there. Magnolia Park also has a fishing pier. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between a pier on the river and piers in parks without treating the different waterfront locations as the same.

Magnolia Park is fully wheelchair accessible. Maintenance or construction work may affect accessibility; fishing conditions and pier availability may also change. Check current conditions before your visit.

Choosing Trails and Activities

The Palmetto Avenue Trail offers another way to spend time outdoors. One section is one and one-third miles long and runs along the east side of South Palmetto Avenue from Ridge Boulevard in the City of South Daytona Beach to SR 400 / Beville Road in the City of Daytona Beach. The trail connects to Riverfront Veterans Memorial Park. This gives you a practical way to plan a trail outing and park visit together. A section of the Palmetto Avenue Trail opened in January 2024.

For those who would rather focus on a course than a trail, Stone Edge Skatepark offers a different option: its outdoor concrete street course is intended for skates, skateboards and bicycles. Central Park, by contrast, has a short walking path with benches and trees. Together with the shell-covered trails in Reed Canal Park’s natural area, these options offer a clear choice between a short walk, trails in a natural area and a course for wheeled activities.

Local History and the Holiday Season

An Ice Age fossil was discovered in Reed Canal Pond in the mid-1970s. Blaine O’Neal Park offers a different historical connection: it commemorates a South Daytona mayor who died unexpectedly in 2010. The two references highlight different things—a fossil discovery and the remembrance of a specific figure in the city’s history.

A holiday decorating tradition takes place each year in Central Park. Decorations are put up before Thanksgiving and remain until after New Year’s. If you’re traveling during this season, check the latest information on dates and programming in advance.
