Manalapan consists of two separate areas connected only by water. At the same time, the town lies along the Intracoastal Waterway. To get your bearings, it helps to keep this distinctive layout in mind: the section along A1A lies between Lantana Public Beach and South Lake Worth Inlet, also known as Boynton Inlet. These names locate the section geographically and make clear that Manalapan should not simply be understood as one continuous land area. Its waterfront location and separate areas provide the setting for the town’s varied themes—from the shipwreck off the coast to its architecture and local history.

A Shipwreck off the Coast

The Lofthus shipwreck lies about 175 yards off the coast of Manalapan and within a Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserve. The approximate distance places the wreck offshore, while the Preserve designation also identifies it as underwater archaeological heritage. It lies in 15 to 20 feet of water and is considered accessible to divers of all experience levels. However, weather and sea conditions can affect its suitability for diving. So if you are considering a dive, check the conditions for your specific date. This allows you to consider the wreck’s historical significance separately from the practical question of whether a dive is possible: one describes the site, while the other depends on the conditions at the time.

Architecture with Different Stories

Eastover brings the focus to the history of building on land. The three-story mansion in the Italian Renaissance Revival style was completed in 1930 and designed by Swiss architect Maurice Fatio. Locally, it is considered an outstanding example of an elaborately designed mansion in this style. The year of construction, the design, and the architectural classification each offer a different point of reference: the year marks the completion of the building, Fatio identifies the architect, and the style describes its architectural language. For those interested in architectural history, Eastover offers a specific subject to explore through both its design and the period in which it was built.

The J. Turner Moore Memorial Library offers a very different architectural point of reference. It is built around the front of a 400,000-gallon water tank. At Eastover, the mansion, its design, and its style are central; at the library, its unusual structural arrangement is the defining detail. The comparison moves from a historically classified villa to an unusual combination of library and water tank. Together, these two very different buildings show that Manalapan’s architectural history cannot be told through just one type of building.

Local History in Two Dates

George H. K. Charter is another figure in Manalapan’s history. In 1882, he claimed 126 acres along a 2.5-mile coastal ridge in Manalapan as a homestead. In 1887, he became the mail contractor for the route known as the Barefoot Mailman route. The two dates represent different milestones: first, Charter’s claim to the specified land, and five years later, his connection with the historic mail route. Along with Eastover’s building history and the Lofthus shipwreck, this chronology adds another perspective to the story of the town. Depending on your interests, you can explore Manalapan through its architecture, underwater archaeology, or local history—all against the backdrop of its distinctive location between separate areas connected only by water.
