The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail circles the lake for about 110 miles. More than half of the trail is paved, so the surface is not uniform along the entire route. There are no fees or permits required to use it. Check the latest usage notices before setting out.

Lake, Waterway, and Boat Access

The Okeechobee Waterway stretches 154 miles from Stuart on the Atlantic to Fort Myers on the Gulf of Mexico. It runs through Lake Okeechobee; west of the lake, it includes the Caloosahatchee River, and east of the lake, the St. Lucie Canal. Those interested in waterways will find a clear connection between lake, river, and canal here, with named endpoints on both coasts.

Two recreational areas in Okeechobee County differ in the amenities they offer for boat access. The C. Scott Driver Recreation Area has two ramps, six lanes, and four docks. Henry Creek Recreation Area has a ramp made of gravel or dirt. Use of both facilities is free. Since operational information may change before your trip, it is a good idea to check in advance.

The Kissimmee River Public Use Area extends across parts of Okeechobee County and is mainly accessible by boat via numerous ramps. Water levels and the status of each location may affect access conditions. Part of the Florida Trail passes through the area; if you want to explore this section on foot, check trail conditions and access beforehand. Fishing is permitted year-round. Check licensing requirements and applicable rules in advance. Visitors can also paddle on the Kissimmee River and observe river wildlife; you should also check water conditions and the availability of related services.

Prairie, Cypress Trees, and Wildlife Viewing

The Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area is in Okeechobee County and has a stand of old cypress trees. Together with Grassy Island, the area offers several opportunities for outdoor activities: both locations have options for cycling, hiking, bird and wildlife watching, and picnicking. Grassy Island also offers horseback riding trails and geocaching. Maintenance work may affect recreational activities; check for current restrictions before your visit.

The Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park protects a different landscape: it is home to the largest remaining area of dry prairie in Florida. Birdwatchers have a good chance of seeing Grasshopper Sparrows, Crested Caracaras, and Burrowing Owls. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. The park is also recognized as Florida’s first Dark Sky Park—another point of interest for those interested in nature and stargazing.

History in the Park and Along the Streets

A significant battle in Florida’s Second Seminole War took place at Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park. The Battle of Okeechobee occurred on Christmas Day in 1837. The Okeechobee Main Street Mural Program also depicts this historic event. Battle reenactments are held at Battlefield Historic State Park once a year, usually in February; the date may change. Check current event dates before planning your visit around one.

Other places also reflect the area’s history. The Okeechobee Historical Society Museum and Schoolhouse includes a schoolhouse dating from 1907. There is also a collection of historic sites along Park Street in Okeechobee, from NW Park Street to SW Park Street. Individual businesses and exhibits may change. Together, these offer different points of historical interest: the 1837 battle, an early 20th-century schoolhouse, and sites along a named street.
