White-sand beaches on the Gulf side and sheltered waterways on the bay side define Boca Grande’s coastal character. Add two distinct lighthouse stories and historic sites that tell the island’s cultural story. This gives you the freedom to choose your own focus for your stay, whether nature, the coast, or history.

Coastal Landscapes and Habitats

White-sand beaches stretch along Boca Grande’s Gulf side. On the bay side, sheltered waterways run through and along a natural mangrove coastline. The two coastal landscapes offer distinct experiences: Gulf beaches on one side and waterways along the mangrove coast on the other. The Gasparilla Island State Park near Boca Grande protects important habitats for gopher tortoises and indigo snakes. Snorkeling is also possible there. This combines a look at protected habitats with a specific activity on the water.

The Boca Grande Bike Path is also connected to the landscape: It covers 35 acres and provides habitat for a wide variety of plants, animals, and birds. Those interested in nature will find a different way to explore the area here than through snorkeling at the state park. The information about habitats and biodiversity reflects the character of the area; it should not be taken as a promise of specific wildlife sightings.

Two Lighthouse Stories

The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, originally known as the Gasparilla Island Light Station, is the oldest structure on Gasparilla Island and has served as a lighthouse for maritime navigation since 1890. A comprehensive museum opened in the lighthouse in 1999. Its rooms are arranged chronologically and cover the island’s cultural and social history from 12,000 BC to the present. This site brings together the lighthouse’s maritime function and the museum’s broad historical scope.

The Gasparilla Island Lighthouse is a separate lighthouse. Its 105-foot-tall tower was built in 1881 by the Phoenix Iron Company in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1927, the U.S. Lighthouse Service rebuilt the tower on Gasparilla Island and installed it there. The lighthouse site on Gasparilla Island is immediately south of the town of Boca Grande. BIPS offers a History Tour Climb at this lighthouse. The opportunity to climb depends on the listed dates and conditions; check them before planning your visit. The grounds around the lighthouse cover 7.4 acres and include walking trails.

Cultural Sites and Local History

Boca Grande’s history is also reflected in buildings with different community connections. Amory Memorial Chapel, formerly called Shiloh Baptist Church, was built in 1959 by Louise and Roger Amory for the African American community on Gasparilla Island. The Boca Grande Community Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the early 1970s, local citizens converted the building into a center for educational and cultural programs. The Gasparilla Inn opened in Boca Grande in 1911; it was the Boca Grande Community Center that was converted into a center for educational and cultural programs.

At the History Center, the “Footprints from the Past” collection includes an interactive touchscreen map with numbered landmarks. It offers a different way to explore history than the chronologically arranged museum rooms in the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse: the exhibition takes visitors through a long span of time, while the map numbers individual landmarks. When exploring the area’s history, you can therefore distinguish between a chronological overview and individual sites.

Art and Seasonal Events

Every March, the Boca Grande Art Center hosts a Spring Show, pairing original works of art with floral arrangements. Dates vary, so check the event dates before planning your stay around it. For water activities, there is also a paddlecraft launch at the beach access on 19th Street East. Access conditions may change, so check them before using the launch. The seasonal art event and practical access for paddlecraft offer two very different ways to experience Boca Grande.
