For your trip planning, Marianna can be explored through three themes: caves and springs, routes on foot or on the water, and history and art. The activities vary considerably in format—from a three-mile historic walking tour to a 51-mile paddling trail. Consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay, then choose the experiences that suit you.

Caves, Springs and Underground Wildlife

Florida Caverns is the only state park in Florida where visitors can take a guided tour through a large cave system. Its formations include stalactites, stalagmites, columns and flowstone. This guided exploration of geological formations sits alongside the related themes of water, landscape and natural history.

Blue Springs is classified as a first-magnitude spring in Florida and feeds Merritt’s Millpond, a 202-acre reservoir. Activities at the Blue Springs Recreation Area include swimming, picnicking, and limited opportunities for SCUBA training and exploration. Check operating details before your arrival. The Blue Spring cave complex is also home to the Georgia Blind Salamander and the Doughterty Plain Cave Crayfish.

These offer two distinct nature themes: the formations take center stage in the Florida Caverns cave system, while at Blue Spring, the two named species are also part of the site’s natural history. The spring and reservoir add another water-related theme.

Hiking Trails and Paddling

The Hinson Conservation and Recreation Area has more than five miles of trails through upland forest, pine landscapes, open fields, karst areas and wetlands. The outer loop is part of the Florida National Scenic Trail. From the parking area at the end of Gator Hole Rd., you can hike along the river on the East or South Loop; you can also launch kayaks or canoes from there.

The Chipola River Paddling Trail begins in Marianna, stretches for 51 miles and continues south. The Chipola River is accessible via CR 280 (Magnolia Rd) and via Peacock Bridge Rd. north of Sink Creek. When planning, you can choose between hiking routes in the Hinson Conservation and Recreation Area and a longer river route. Each offers a different way to experience the landscape: on foot along trails or on the water along the Chipola River.

History in the City Center

The Marianna Historic District covers about 50 acres and is a mixed-use area containing the city’s main historic commercial, administrative and residential areas. The district is bounded by Davis, Park, Jackson and Wynn Streets. This description presents the historic city center as an area with multiple functions, not just a collection of individual historic buildings.

The Battle of Marianna Walking Tour is a three-mile loop through the Civil War battlefield of Marianna. It begins beside Fountain Park, in front of the Jackson County Visitor Center. The Battle of Marianna statue stands in Confederate Park and is part of the tour. Another historic site, St. Luke’s Episcopal Cemetery, is a pioneer burial ground containing the graves of many prominent Marianna residents.

Historic Russ House also provides a tangible reference point for Marianna’s architectural history: it was built in the 1890s and extensively remodeled in 1910. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery, walking tour and house offer different perspectives on the area’s history—as a burial ground, historic site and building with two clearly dated phases.

Art and Performing Arts

The Dr. Gene Prough Center for the Arts brings together performance spaces and an art gallery. The proscenium main theater has 655 seats; alongside it is a flexible 150-seat experimental theater for intimate works, innovative programs and recitals. The two spaces differ in both size and the uses described.

The gallery features works by Chipola College students and faculty, as well as regional, national and internationally recognized artists. Along with the performance spaces, the gallery adds visual art to Marianna’s historical and scenic offerings. Check in advance to see which performances or exhibitions are currently on.
