A distinctive way to explore Goulding is through its industrial history. The story of the former Agrico site began in 1891 with the opening of the Goulding Fertilizer Company. Operations at the former Goulding fertilizer plant ended in 1975. The Goulding Community was located near a fertilizer plant, two miles north of downtown Pensacola. The station’s name has its own timeline: the station eventually became known as Goulding Station in 1892. The area’s history thus offers different points of connection—the development of the plant, the location of the community, and the station’s historical name.

Historical Traces in Goulding

Other historical traces can be seen in photographs: a 1905 photograph shows the old Goulding Schoolhouse near Leonard and Palafox; a photograph taken around 1900 documents Goulding Railroad Depot, 2.3 miles north of Pensacola. A historical photograph shows Road 95 in the corridor between Goulding and Cantonment before construction; the view looks north from a point about 150 feet south of the intersection of Palafox Street and Nine Mile Road. The schoolhouse, depot, and road corridor provide different geographic reference points for the area’s history.

Art and Culture in Pensacola

Nearby Pensacola offers several arts and cultural attractions. The Pensacola Museum of Art presents art and cultural exhibitions. The Symphony Orchestra also gives performances in Pensacola, and the Saenger Theater is another part of the city’s arts and cultural scene. The options include different formats: exhibitions, orchestra performances, and the theater as another cultural venue. If you want to plan your trip around a particular exhibition or performance, check current programs and dates beforehand. When choosing, consider whether your main interest is art, music, or theater.

A Historic District and a Cycling Route

The North Hill Preservation District broadens the view of historic sites. Nearby, it spans 50 city blocks, was designated a preservation district in 1973, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its extent makes it a different scale from a single cultural venue. Also nearby, the North Hill - Belmont Devilliers Loop cycling route passes, among other places, Plaza Ferdinand VII, the Belmont Devilliers Cultural Arts Center, Alabama Square, and Fort George. This offers two distinct formats to choose from: a designated historic district and a cycling route to several named destinations.

Nature in the Wider Region

Landscape and water activities also lead to the wider region. The Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail begins at Big Lagoon State Park; Gulf Islands National Seashore in Escambia County includes Fort Pickens, among other places. These two natural attractions differ: a named paddling trail begins at the park, while Fort Pickens is part of the National Seashore. For specific visit plans, check the latest visitor information.
