There are several reasons to choose Lecanto as a destination: a long trail, walking paths in town, hikes to caves, and natural attractions in the surrounding area. Lecanto also has a historical connection to the Citrus County Fair.
Trails of Different Scales
The Suncoast Trail is more than 55 miles long, with endpoints in Lecanto and Tampa’s northwestern suburbs. Its entire length follows State Toll Highway 589, the Suncoast Parkway. This gives it a regional scale that sets it apart from the walking paths in Lecanto Community Park.
Lecanto Community Park has shaded, paved walking paths and a dog-walking area. These features define what the park offers: walking paths and a dedicated area for walking dogs.
Cave Hikes and Natural Attractions
The approximate trail distances provide a concrete point of comparison for the two cave hikes: Dames Cave can be reached from the trailhead parking area on Highway 491 via a walk of about half a mile; Jeep Cave is accessible via the B-C Loop Connector Trail and the Florida National Scenic Trail on a hike of about two miles. Check trail conditions before visiting Dames Cave.
Near Lecanto, the Citrus Wildlife Management Area is a site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Also nearby, the Citrus Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest offers opportunities for camping, wildlife viewing, hiking, birdwatching, picnicking, and horseback riding. The two natural attractions have different highlights: one is notable for its designated trail affiliation, while the other offers a variety of activities. The Citrus Tract is accessible via Lecanto Highway, also called Highway 491.
Local History and Other Attractions
The first documented reference to the Citrus County Fair dates to October 5, 1920. At the time, officials planned to hold the fair in Lecanto. The fair grew out of earlier 4-H exhibits held in a metal building in Lecanto. Its history thus links a dated planning reference with an earlier form of the exhibition at the same location.
Outpost Range is located at 2930 S. Cauthen Point in Lecanto, Florida. Offerings include rifle, pistol, and shotgun shooting, as well as archery. Courses cover concealed carry in Florida, long-range workshops, and the fundamentals of firearm safety.
Mertailor's Mermaid Aquarium Encounter is an independent indoor aquarium and mermaid attraction in Lecanto. It offers an indoor-focused experience alongside the area's trails, natural attractions, and historical connections. Lecanto Poultry also offers farm pickup of its products.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
For hikes, you can compare the approximate trail distances to Dames Cave and Jeep Cave; nature observation, local history, and the indoor aquarium offer other points of interest. Focus your search for hotels in Lecanto on what you would like to experience during your stay.
