Rockledge offers several different themes for a stay: a pier on the Indian River Lagoon, trails through a range of habitats, the history of a Victorian house, and public ice skating. When choosing what to visit, it helps to consider the character of each destination: at Riverwalk, the path leads from a Florida hammock forest to the lagoon; at the sanctuary, habitat diversity takes center stage; and Lawndale offers a look at local history through guided tours. The Space Coast Iceplex adds public skating sessions to these nature and culture experiences.

By the Water: Riverwalk and Nature Center

Riverwalk is a 6.37-acre community park on the Indian River Lagoon. Its 915-foot pier passes through a natural Florida hammock forest to the lagoon. This makes for a clearly defined nature outing: the path itself connects forest and water, while the pier’s length provides a specific measurement for planning. If you’re focusing on this connection, you can distinguish Riverwalk from the Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary, where the trail passes through several habitat types. The units of measurement also help put the figures in context: acres refer to the park’s area, while feet indicate the length of the pier.

Interpretive signs at the Riverwalk Nature Center cover the habitats and wildlife of the Indian River Lagoon. Guided tours at the Nature Center are available by appointment. In addition to the signs, guided explanations are available; if you’re planning a tour, arrange a time in advance.

A Trail Through Different Habitats

The Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary offers a different perspective on nature. Visitors can hike the trail in the western part of the 168-acre protected area. The trail passes through pine flatwoods, oak stands, sand pine scrub, and freshwater depression marshes. These four habitat types give the trail its variety and offer a different reason to visit than the pier leading to the water. The area figures also clearly distinguish the two places: Riverwalk covers 6.37 acres, while the sanctuary covers 168 acres. To choose between the two nature experiences, consider whether you’re more interested in a direct connection to the lagoon or the sanctuary’s varied habitats.

Lawndale: Home and Community History

Lawndale shifts the focus from landscape to architecture and community history. The restored Victorian house is furnished as a family home from 1895. Guides in period clothing lead visitors through the house and tell the story of the community and the people who lived there. Unlike the trails and interpretive signs, Lawndale centers on life in a historic home and stories of local lives.

Ice Skating at the Space Coast Iceplex

The Space Coast Iceplex offers public skating sessions every day at an indoor ice rink. As an alternative to trails and a house tour, it provides an activity on the ice. Check the current public skating schedule before you go if you’re making plans to visit.
